This 16cd box has been issued by Universal Music Italia/Deutsche Grammophon and collects the 3 complete symphonic cycles of Beethoven, Brahms and Bruckner. All the music has been previously available in different editions (Brahms in a double cd in the "Originals" serie and Bruckner in many boxes and single issues of the major symphonies).

The rarity is the Beethoven cycle, orginally issued in the "Original Masters" serie, long out of print and hard to find. Here on Amazon, notable reviews have been written about the 3 cycles. So, I will add a few notes and comparisons with other Jochum recordings.

First: this set is complementary to the "Eugen Jochum: Icon - The Complete EMI Recordings" one (see my review).

And the EMI box contains the best complete Beethoven cycle (1977 with the London Symphony Orchestra) of the 3 recorded by Jochum: best studio recording of the Eroica and great and deeply spiritual Fifth, but also notable 2nd and 7th, plus four superlative overtures.

In this set you'll find:
- a great Eroica with the Berliner Philharmoniker, from 1954 with excellent mono audio: the conducting is granit and urgent (affirmative first mov. and solemn Marcia Funebre).
- a strong 4th with the Berliner Philharmoniker from 1961 (as excellent as the LSO/EMI version).
- a monumental Ninth (great chorus treatment), despite the mediocre mono sound from 1952.
But all the symphonies deserve a careful listening to appreciate the magistery of Jochum. Also, great are the "Leonore 2" and "Ruins of Athens" overtures.

Jochum, underrated as ever, and wayward as ever is often so musical and illuminating that this set presents many gems.

I'll admit that I've been a bit prejudiced against Jochum due to his poorly-conducted DIE MESTERSINGER set. However, such is not the case here with strong recordings of the Beethoven Brahms, and Bruckner cycles that are marvelous in every way. Grab this before it disappears and greedy buggers are wanting high prices for it.

An extremely great set of all the symphonies, with thoughtful clear and powerful interpretations without any thought that Jochum is standing between the composer and listener
