This album benefits from the unusual inclusion of two versions of the same tune, not in the 'alternate take' style of many a Blue Note release, but because one version is in Jobim's native Brazilian Portugese, and the other is in English. The piece in question, which both starts and finishes the disc, is the ineffably beautiful 'Waters of March (Aguas De Março)', and if all the other material was excruciatingly bad, which needless to say it isn't, this album would still be worth considerably more than a paltry £8.99 (indeed, you can'y put a monetary value on this kind of transcendent beauty).
This is also an unusual album in that it features some heavily orchestrated music, still subtle and minimal, written for films (including the ten minute suite:'Temas Dos Filmes Crônica Da Casa Assassinada'), and showing signs of Jobim's classical influences (Debussy, Villa-Lobos). In this venture Jobim works closely with his favourite arranger Claus Ogerman, who does a sterling job. Recorded in late 1972 in New York, with both Brazilian and American musicians, this is an unusual, almost eccentric, but certainly very rewarding recording from Jobim's illustrious and prolific catalogue.
Mirroring the album's arrangement, I want to both start and end my review reflecting on the manifestation of Jobim's singular genius that is 'Waters of March (Aguas De Março)'. Not only is the music beautiful, and Jobim has given the world masses of beautiful music, but also, the poetry of the lyrics is mind-blowing. And apparently the lyrics work even better in Portugese! Brilliant - buy it now, you won't regret it!
