Even if they can’t name him right away as the composer, just about everybody knows some of the bossa nova music of Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim. His dozens of beautiful melodies have become part of the standard song repertoire throughout the world.

Tom Jobim, as he was known familiarly, was born in l927 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and died in l994. As he liked to tell ... Read more in Amazon's Antonio Carlos Jobim Store

By Sebastian Palmer TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This album benefits from the unusual inclusion of two versions of the same tune, not in the 'alternate take' style of many a Blue Note release, but because one version is in Jobim's native Brazilian Portugese, and the other is in English. The piece in question, which both starts and finishes the disc, is the ineffably beautiful 'Waters of March (Aguas De Março)', and if all the other material was excruciatingly bad, which needless to say it isn't, this album would still be worth considerably more than a paltry £8.99 (indeed, you can'y put a monetary value on this kind of transcendent beauty).
This is also an unusual album in that it features some heavily orchestrated music, still subtle and minimal, written for films (including the ten minute suite:'Temas Dos Filmes Crônica Da Casa Assassinada'), and showing signs of Jobim's classical influences (Debussy, Villa-Lobos). In this venture Jobim works closely with his favourite arranger Claus Ogerman, who does a sterling job. Recorded in late 1972 in New York, with both Brazilian and American musicians, this is an unusual, almost eccentric, but certainly very rewarding recording from Jobim's illustrious and prolific catalogue.
Mirroring the album's arrangement, I want to both start and end my review reflecting on the manifestation of Jobim's singular genius that is 'Waters of March (Aguas De Março)'. Not only is the music beautiful, and Jobim has given the world masses of beautiful music, but also, the poetry of the lyrics is mind-blowing. And apparently the lyrics work even better in Portugese! Brilliant - buy it now, you won't regret it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great work, lousy remaster 24 Aug 2000
By A Customer - Published on
Format:Audio CD
This is a brilliant album, but the sound is unfortunately inferior to that of the Brazilian CD version, which bears the original cover and title ("Tom Jobim-Matita Perê"). This version, in comparison, is hiss-filled and not as rich-sounding. That's why it loses a star. Audiophiles are advised to seek out the Brazilian-issued CD instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Jobim's best... 9 Jun 2000
By A Customer - Published on
Format:Audio CD
I came across this album in a record store in Frankfurt, Germany back in 1973 or 1974, and bought it primarily because I loved "Mantiqueira Range" so much. After listening to the rest of it a few times I really loved the whole thing. I've been looking for this to come out on CD for years, and I'm glad they finally did it. The music is haunting, wistful, happy...all kinds of things. It's also incurably romantic; great music for having the lights down low...

5.0 out of 5 stars jobim at his best 16 April 2000
By A Customer - Published on
Format:Audio CD
This is definitely Jobim at his best. On this album from 1973 he introduced one of the loveliest songs ever recorded, Aguas de Marco (Jobim sings it here both in Portugese and English). There are many other favourites, such as lengthy, richly orchestrated piece Cronica de Casa Assassinada or Matita Pere. For those who only know the bossanova side of Jobim this record will be a huge surprise - but what a pleasant one! By all means a classic and a welcome re-release.

5.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying mix of Jobim standards & film music... 17 Jun 2000
By Barbara J. Major - Published on
Format:Audio CD
It was not long after this LP was released that Coca-Cola used "Aguas de Marco" (Waters of March) for one of its own tv commercials. We are treated to two language versions of that song in this album, along with many other Jobim compositions, all skillfully arranged by Claus Ogerman. I especially enjoyed the film music that is included here. Jobim was a man of many different composing talents, and this album--out of all he recorded--showcases and illustrates this in a perfect way. Definitely a must-have CD for any Jobim fan.
