5.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling Sutherland 24 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album, mainly from the early sixties, shows Joan's coloratura ability at its very finest - which is to say second to none! There's little by way of grand opera here, but it's a delightful collection nonetheless of songs and operetta arias. No allowances have to be made for the sound quality because this is Decca at its best and the accompaniments from Bonynge as both conductor and pianist are excellent. The original vinyl album would have been rather short so, to increase the running length of this CD, Decca has added 4 items from the slightly later "Love Live Forever" operetta album. These are great, but to me they do seem a little out of place in the middle of the disc. I would rather they had been added at the end. However, this is to be a bit churlish because that later album is hard to find (and worth seeking out). Any lover of spectacular singing should have this in their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious Sutherland singing more popular tunes 16 Feb 2003
By Larry D. Rodriguez - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Why hasn't anyone reviewed this wonderful recital by the great Joan Sutherland? For those more familiar with her operatic reperetoire, you will be equally amazed by her technique in this series of waltzes and popular songs. This CD gathers up recordings made at different times during her career;thus, the vocal quality isn't always the same (yes, there are instances of mushy, garbled diction). If you have the recently released La Stupenda compilation, you will recognize some of the material here. However, you haven't heard the very best. Why they left out the Gipsy and the Bird and Mattinata is beyond me. They are true Sutherland treasures.
This recital is likely to go out of the catalog before too long; I suggest you buy it to round out your Sutherland collection

5.0 out of 5 stars LP 2 of Command Performance on CD 22 Sep 2010
By Aronne - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This set gathers the music from the second LP of Sutherland's 1962 recital Command Performance (LP 1 is available too) with four tracks from her 1966 operetta recital Love Live Forever (available in part, minus these tracks, or in whole).

As light as the music is, it is a pleasure to hear Sutherland singing it. Unlike many divas, Joan Sutherland was a cheerful and sweet-tempered person at heart. That quality of La Stupenda shines through on this disc, making it a must have for any of her fans.

Her diction is never outstanding here, but it is still good enough, particularly when the disc includes complete texts and translations, even though Decca dispensed with program notes. On the whole, an excellent bargain.
