Product Description

Product Description

Joan Eardley was one of the best loved Scottish artists of the twentieth century. Her observations of children in the back streets of Glasgow as well as her expressionistic drawings and oils of the elements on the north-east coast of Scotland have caught the imagination of the Scottish public. Eardley is cherished as a painter of the Scottish identity in both town and country, who had a unique ability to sum up a community and the timeless drama of the natural world. This book accompanies the first major retrospective of her work for twenty years, and examines Eardley's oeuvre and its place in the international and British context and her reputation. It includes paintings and drawings from private collections, which have not been seen for many years, and works from the collection of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, which also holds the Joan Eardley Archive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joan Eardley, 30 May 2009

This is an excellent book on one of my favourite women painters. Produced for a major retrospective of her work it has many examples of her paintings which are good colour reproductions. The book covers much of her subject matter, children, seascapes, landscapes etc and clearly shows her vibrant use of colour and paint application. Her move towards semi abstraction in her seascapes and the power of her imagery in these works is brought out in the book. I had already seen the book and therefore knew what I was buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joan Eardley, 17 Dec 2009

(REAL NAME)
Over the years I have bought many art books and at the moment I am studing woman artists. This short lived artist had an exceptional talent. The book is an excellent biography filled with exceptional artwork. I rate it overall 5 stars. Although I have only had it a short while I've already returned to it to take in this artists work.
