Product Description

Product Description

Arx Fatalis is a first-person nonlinear RPG which plunges the player into an amazingly complex fantasy world. Arx Fatalis combines an intelligent story with impressive medieval surroundings. The user-friendly interface allows the highest interactivity possible. Arx Fatalis creates a state of intense immersion that allows the player to feel that all his actions have a direct consequence in the Arx game world.

The goal of the game is to destroy the secret cult of Akbaa, the god of devastation and chaos, thereby preventing his return to the physical world. Should the player fail, the demon is bound to impose his reign of terror upon Arx. The player assumes the role of the potential hero, fights inside an underground fortress using wooden clubs, swords and magical items to defend himself against creatures including goblins, trolls, rat-men and other vicious opponents. However, brute force is not always the best way to succeed: The player has at his disposal the innovative new "onscreen gesture based magic system" to assist him in his progress through the game. Using the mouse, burning runes can be drawn in mid-air. A series of these gestures combine to create powerful magic spells that will protect the player or empower him to defeat his enemies and pursue his quest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good use of magic at last!, 22 Nov 2002

This review is from: Arx Fatalis (PC) (Video Game)
Let's get this out of the way first, if you are looking for pretty graphics - go buy Morrowind. If you like your adventures dark, moody and clausteraphobic then this is the place to be. You are in a castle, so in keeping with the setting the graphics are dark, but there are reasons for everything and this comes clear to you soon enough. Apart from using a torch (doh!) this is where this game shines, you could always use magic to help light your way, The magic system is the best in any game yet. You have to collect runes(small stones with symbols) but once you do you can use magic. Unlike other games where you click on a spell and it happens, you actually have to draw out the symbols in the air (onscreen of course). This is a good thing as you start to learn more spells, combat using magic becomes fun. You could always use your normal weapons where headshots actually count for something. but the magic aspect in combat, trying to remember the symbols and the combos of them add a lot. I would rate this up with Baldur's, it is that good. Just like the old Ultima Underworld, not a bad thng you must agree. Buy this or miss something special.

A great, wonderful game. Lovely graphics, fantastic sound and a real sense of being underground. It has graphically bloody combat and a rather odd Black and White style spell casting system.
I have only scratched the games surface, but it combines elements of Ultima Underworld, Thief and numerous other D&D type RPGs. The EAX sound is really well done too, with howls, dripping water etc echoing around you.
I really recommend this, and the games developer made the odd but excellent Sacrifice (which sold two copies). PC Zone and PC Gamer both liked it giving it about 82% each.
A great feeling of exploring, top graphics and pure fun. Buy it and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great RPG, 1 May 2003
This review is from: Arx Fatalis (PC) (Video Game)
Arx Fatalis is a superb RPG for the PC. I speak as someone in their sixties who sometimes finds the Arcade Action to difficult.Arx allows you to solve problems in several differnet ways if the Combat is to hard believe me there is a sneaky way to ensure you get the edge.

The game is well supported by JoWood on the Web with an active Forum also at RPG.com a comprehensive walkthrough is available.I completed the game with the help of the Forum.

A great game with around 60 hours game play at least. Go get it and enjoy.

Terry
