Barely Live is one of the few Jo Brand standups available on DVD and it is excellent. She talks of her recent change in terms of becoming a mother (and of her husband) and she truly portrays life in general and men in particular in a less than glowing light. The fact that she has beef with other issues, such as weight, Trinny and Susannah, etc. is an added plus.
She is quite measured in her delivery and not nearly as manic as many other stand up comedians - something providing a welcome change of pace, if you are watching several stand ups in a short period of time.
The one real benefit of the video is that most of the material isn't constantly played in Live at the Apollo or similar reruns on Dave - meaning that much of it may very well be new to the viewer (would be hard to press the topics into QI in a repeated fashion). Given that the show is from 2003 there is surprisingly little in it that one could describe as dated.
Sure, some males may find their egos lightly bruised but overall she is no softer on herself, women or feminsits, so if you take it as intended, it's excellent comedy, well worth getting on a DVD, as you will hardly find it all gathered anywhere else.
