The case was a free offer with the iPod I bought. It does exactly what is required - protects the screen yet gives complete access to the controls. I have no knowledge of comparable products but can't imagine anything better.

Jivo Technology Sparkle Hardcase JI-1066 protection for the Nano 4Gen (Clear)
Initially I thought this was rather expensive for an i-pod cover. Mine came free with my i-pod, but when I came to buy same for my husband I had to pay. However,I am very pleased with the product, which protects the i-pod very well and has shown no sign of wear.
