5.0 out of 5 stars Warm, colourful and informative 8 May 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book serves as an excellent learning aid for students studying with The Jitsu Foundation or any one of the branches of Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu.

Rather than taking the common approach of a very dry instructional manual, this book (and indeed the series) present the techniques in a wider context of the training experience. Alongside sections explaining the the history of the art, why you might choose it, what to expect, and details of the techniques, are amusing and sometimes touching anecdotes from practitioners of the art. Especially encouraging for novices and lower grades will be the fact that these anecdotes from less experienced jiu jitsuka.

The techniques are clearly present in colour photographs throughout, and explained with reference to the dojo environment and also a self-defence context. Techniques covered include breakfalling, arm locks, wrist locks, ground holds, throws and weapon defences amongst others.

The book won't teach you the art alone, but it will certainly serve as an invaluable reference if you're already training with the Jitsu Foundation or perhaps inspire you to start!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jitsu For All 17 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this recently to serve as a learning aide for my up and coming orange Belt grading with the Jitsu Foundation. However I did not realise that the book did not contain the recent syllabus changes and therefore its usefulness was down graded somewhat, that being said for a beginner it does help with one of the more difficult aspects of learning jitsu which is remembering the names of the techniques, which the book is very useful for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated but still usefull 21 April 2012

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A useful intro into Jitsu techniques, it contains a lot of technical advice with some good pointers and general information. It is good addition to regular training and a nice start for some home study. As has been mentioned above this book is not up to date with recent syllabus changes, an updated version of the series would be awesome at some point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really helpful 5 Jun 2011
If you are training with the Jitsu foundation then this book is really helpful and I credit it with getting me through my green belt grding. as you progress there becomes more and more to remember so it's good to have a reference and explanation. Reading step by step instructions was also quite useful if there was a technique that I was struggling with in training.

I think there have been some slight syllabus changes since this book was made however I believe there is less rather than more included in the earlier belts so it should contain all you need.

This type of book can't really be used as a "teach-yourself" manual. You do need to go to training. Still it might be an interesting read if you are looking to start a martial art or already train in something similar like judo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beginners take note 24 Aug 2012

This is the beginner book of the trilogy. Again, one cannot properly learn any Martial Art out of a book, but this is nice to have to compare with what your instructor is teaching you. Book gives an idea of what promotions are about. Ed
