4.0 out of 5 stars Its got its flaws but its got a lot going for it 10 Mar 2010
By Gentlegiantprog TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
The main concert is presented in 16:9 but with black bars at the sides because the original movie was shot with 1960s American television in mind, but which was transferred to Blu Ray at 1080i with a choice of soundtracks between a 5.1 soundtrack mixed by Eddie Kramer in DTS HD Master stereo or a Stereo soundtrack in Dolby Digital.
Hendrix plays a short eight song set, consisting of five cover songs and three originals. The Track listing is `Killing Floor,' `Foxey Lady,' `Like A Rolling Stone,' `Rock Me Baby,' `Hey Joe,' `The Wind Cries Mary,' `Purple Haze,' and `Wild Thing.'
The sound is very good and the performance is energetic and features all picking with the teeth, between the legs guitar playing and equipment abuse you'd expect along with the famous miming having sex with an actually burning guitar.
The concert isn't perfect and will often get more praise than it deserves for it incredible historic significance than its own actual quality, your enjoyment of the concert will vary depending on how big a Hendrix fan you are and also how forgiving you are; there are some forgivable music mistakes, some understandable feedback issues, the second half of the concert features stray strands of hair on the camera lens and of course the concert is very short and doesn't feature a lot of original material
A less forgivable flaw is that the video and audio are out of sync quite often but this is something you will just have to accept like the black bars on a Blu Ray, which seems to upset a lot of viewers. If you are serious about either issue this may not be the Blu Ray for you.
Some people also seem to expect the concert to look better than it does, as if being on Blu Ray would magically improve a 16mm camera in low light conditions, with hair on the lens.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hi Def? 14 Mar 2008
Format:HD DVD
Altough this DVD may appeal to the Jimi Hebdrix fan, what a waste of a high definition disk. The sound and picture quality are poor with the failings of the original recording only being amplified by the hi definition format.

If you are a Hendrix fan then get it, but do not waste you money on HD DVD get it in DVD. If you want it for the visual and audio experience of hi definition then do not bother.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix HD DVD Review 17 April 2010
Format:HD DVD|Verified Purchase
As for HD spec forget it although I do appreciate that it is old film footage that has been converted. Music content and documantary storyline is exellent if you are Jimi Hendrix fan and interested in pop music and concert history.
