Biography

Biography by Richie Unterberger & Sean Westergaard
In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Best Performances 11 Jan 2007
Format:Audio CD
I first heard this CD when I was about 14 and it was the 'that album' for me. You know the one I mean, the one that first opens your ears to the sheer awesomeness of what music can be. I still haven't heard anything at all like it and I'm 25 now.

I find it difficult to describe the performances on here. Jimi's playing is simply extraterestrial. So unpredictable and with so so much energy but so exact and perfectly formulated. Mitch's drums complement excellently. I absolutley dug it when I first heard it and I played it so much that my copy got scratched to the point of not being playable so I'm getting a new one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jimi checks tha reino 13 Aug 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is a collection of jimi's best live performances digitally remastered so they sound amazing, the blues numbers in particular. The only downside is that there is just 12 tracks. If you're a Hendrix fan i'd definately recommend this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Essential Live Hendrix Album 11 Jan 2013
By XBBX
Format:Audio CD
This review is for the CD of "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts" on Castle Communications (CCSCD 235).

The Jimi Hendrix Concerts was produced by Alan Douglas, the man who had control of the Hendrix catalogue from the early 1970's into the early 1990's. Over the years Douglas has been denigrated by fans for his at times quite literal butchery of the Hendrix recorded legacy, and although The Jimi Hendrix Concerts doesn't escape the "touch of Douglas" completely unscathed, it does remain one of the best live Jimi Hendrix Experience albums ever released.

To give credit where credit is due, Douglas had the wise idea of presenting this compilation of live material as if it were a single performance, so the tracks are seamlessly linked by applause and on-stage banter which gives the listener a more involving experience.

Some people have complained of Douglas' decision to add to these recordings reverb which did not exist on the original tapes. Normally I'd also be against such after-the-fact tampering, but here I'd argue in its defence as it results in a consistancy of sound across the selection which completely reinforces the "single concert" concept. Almost everything you hear on this album sounds like it belongs on this album, it sounds like a single live show, not the patchwork listening experience all too often found on live compilations.

One big personal negative is that Douglas used noise reduction technology on this release. The only way to hear the album on CD without that treatment is either the original Media Motion release or an early Japanese Polydor issue.

But how about the music itself? This really is quite an astounding set.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLOW YA MIND 30 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
I friend of mine went into a record store and said, "I wont the crazyest stuff ya got" ( we are talking early 80's), among other things he got Frank Zappa etc. My friend played this Hendrix tape too me, It blow my mind , I borrowed the tape off him and never gave it back then. I played it until it was worn outthen bought another one and wore that out as well.

It doesnt get any better than this , need to be played loud with plenty of bass and with no interuptions

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Hendrix album, a must have. 6 Jun 2009
By Heavy
Format:Audio CD
Excellent live recording of Hendrix at his best and a good selection of tracks. I first listened to this double album in the early 80s when it first came out and was the second album that I had heard by Jimi. It made a huge impact on me and it still has the same impact on me now when I listen to it. Get if you can. The best is 'when I hear my train coming' and 'Are you experienced' when I heard the studio version I was disappointed. PS crank it up good style.

This was a guy who knew exactly what he wanted when recording in the studio, overdubs, strange guitar noise controlled to maximum effect tapes played backwards etc all ideas caught on tape, funny now to think back and remember that Jimi was so shy of singing in front of others he sang ( in the studio ) and hide behind speakers. still live the whole thing was a circus which became out of control. ( how many times do people want to see a lighter fuelled guitar burning? its all still here the music and energy this trio whipped up is astonishing, they at times the man and his fellow musicians were unbelievable and its a bloody good job people recorded it so others can hear it..buy now..
