I had heard about this book, but never read it,as it had been out of print for many years. Now I have read it I can't get it out of my head.
The hero is a little boy called James, known as Jimbo. He is fascinated by a nearby Empty House, and imagines it to be occupied by Red Indians. His father engages a governess, Miss Lake, and tells her to "Knock the nonsense out of his head." She tell Jimbo that the Empty House contains Bad Things that may run out and catch him,and keep him prisoner all his life. She is trying to help him,but she goes about it the wrong way. Jimbo is very frightened, and his father dismisses Miss Lake.
Later Jimbo wanders off, gets tossed by a cow,and lands on his head. While he is lying unconscious he has a kind of dream about the Empty House,in which he seems to be a prisoner, having lost his memory. When Miss Lake comes to help him in the dream, she is anxious to make amends, but he doesn't remember her. After a while he grows wings and she teaches him to use them, also having wings herself. The descriptions of the flights they take together,as she is helping him prepare to escape from the Monster that is holding him, are extremely beautiful.I won't give away the ending, but this is the kind of book you have to keep thinking about long after you have finished it; now it is back in print no fantasy fan should miss it!
