Book Description

17 Nov 2009
The sixteen houses and apartments featured here respond to different needs and sites, but all share a common DNA. They are the product of a singular vision and a collaborative process.

—Michael Webb

Seattle-based architect Jim Olson, the founding partner of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects, is particularly known for his subtly elegant residences, from a glass farmhouse in eastern Oregon to a Balinese-inspired retreat in Hawaii, from a diminutive waterfront cabin for his own family to two grand art-filled residences on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle. Modern in spirit, the luxurious houses are characterized by intangible qualities of light and space. Olson balances a deep knowledge of architectural history, from the temples of Egypt to the great buildings of the modern era, with a sensitivity to art and nature. Each work is carefully calibrated to site and client.

Olson is fascinated by the relationship between art and architecture, and many of his houses and apartments have been designed for major art collectors. The sixteen residences in this volume—in Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, and Hong Kong—explore that interplay as well as the correspondences between light, space, and mood. The finely proportioned interior spaces are distinguished by a striking use of both natural and highly refined materials, masterful modulation of light, sophisticated details, sleek furnishings, and a careful balance between monumentality and intimacy. In natural settings, his buildings often weave into their surroundings as if they had always been there; in urban environments, his designs create and enhance a sense of community. The introduction, by noted design writer Michael Webb, emphasizes context and process, vital factors in Jim Olson’s work.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic 19 Jan 2011
By JonathanC - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I absolutely loved this book. The elegance and refinement of all the projects makes it an instant classic and places Jim Olson as one of the best architects of our time, on par with such masters as Renzo Piano or Richard Neutra. There is a level of perfection and detail that is rarely seen in architecture today and a sense of peaceful meditation on the settings in which each house is built. The Hong Kong house, which is on the cover, is one of my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Work of an Incredible Master 25 Jan 2011
By michael sharkey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Anyone who likes residential architecture should have this book. The grace and elegance of each project is astounding, the pictures are beautifully shot and the introduction is carefully worded. The book takes you on a first class world tour of extraordinary houses, from Oregon to Hong Kong, and leaves you with a great sense of harmony. The choice of materials reflects the purity of the design and the windows seem to always open onto sceneries that make you want to meditate on the world. I like the fact that there isn't too much text, that images are let to speak for themselves. All in all, this is one of the best gifts that was given to me.

The projects in this book are so beautiful. I can flip through it for hours! I aspire one day to own a house like one of these, but until then, this book has given me great ideas.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing 14 Jan 2011
By Hawkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I received this book as a Christmas gift and was extremely excited to dig in, however there isn't much to this book. Maybe I had high expectations because Tom Kundig's (the K in OSKA) book is amazing. When compared to Kundig's book there is hardly any process sketches, or details, or text for that matter. Each project begins with an extremely short project description and a small sketch, the floor plans are also small and contain no legend. The pictures in this book while nice, seem repetitive and many are just unnecessary. Lastly the architectural designs themselves apart from the Glass Farmhouse & Bird Watcher's Residence come off as Lavish McMansions.

If you are interested in this book showing the work of a great Seattle Architect - I just wanted to give you a heads up that I just found it on ebay - new - from Australia for $62 bucks and free shipping. Just a tad more affordable than some of the sellers listed here on Amazon - definitely a first for me!
