Product Description

Sesame Street and The Muppet Show introduced Jim Henson's Muppets to the world, making Kermit the Frog, Oscar the Grouch, and Big Bird household names. But even as a child in rural Mississippi, listening to the radio and putting on comedy shows for his family, Jim recognized the power of laughter to bring people together. On Sesame Street, Jim's Muppets transformed children's television by making learning fun for kids everywhere. A visionary, Jim always believed that puppets could reach a wider audience. In 1976, he proved it, drawing millions of family viewers to The Muppet Show. With his feature film The Dark Crystal and his Star Wars characters—including Yoda—Jim continued to push the boundaries of what was possible in puppetry until his death in 1990 at the age of 53.

Kathleen Krull, recipient of the Children's Book Guild 2011 Non-fiction Award and many other accolades, once again does what she does so well—illuminating the life of an important figure in history, art, and culture with her informative but approachable writing style.

Most sensa-tional, inspira-tional, celebra-tional, Muppeta-tional... 27 Oct 2011
By M. Heiss - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
We have rediscovered The Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock through the DVD releases, and my kids laugh and giggle as much as we used to when we were kids.

Your outside-the-box kid will enjoy this biography of the creative mind behind the Muppets. 3rd-5th grade interest, or younger for read-alouds. The book shows Henson practicing and trying new things, despite public and parental disapproval. It shows him relaxed and playful, and quietly thinking and sketching. It also pictures him posed behind and under his Muppets, making the magic happen.

Sensational, detailed illustrations -- the people have a soft, out-of-focus look, while the Muppets seem real.

A Master Puppeteer 2 Nov 2011
By Catherine W. Hughes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This picture book traces Jim Henson's path from a child in Mississippi, who loved to tell stories, to an adult creator of the Muppets. Growing up without TV, Jim learned to be creative. After his family purchased a TV in 1950, Jim worked to develop his own TV show, with puppets, Sam and Friends. Having traveled to Europe, Jim Henson formed a new company called Muppets, Inc. Shortly after his trip to Europe, Jim was invited to help with a new TV show called Sesame Street. Jim developed a beloved cast of puppet characters, from Big Bird to Oscar the Grouch, for the TV show, making television history. Children ages 5-8 will like this book and love to learn about the creator of some their favorite television characters.

Not worthy of Henson 4 April 2012
By Bookmark - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Not lovin' the cover of this book; it's too pink. And the illustrators chose a particularly unfortunate hairstyle and untrimmed beard for Henson. I won't mention the shirt, which, yes, was probably hip at some point in the 1960s. What is so disappointing is that painters Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher don't manage to capture the sparkle of creativity and delight in the eye of Jim Henson that is so apparent in photographs and film of the man who created the wonderful Muppets.

Krull's text is about as uninspired as the illustrations. The composition offers nothing lyrical or creative and the vocabulary is banal. While lacking style, the content offers some nice information about the beginnings of Sesame Street. There are a number of Henson biographies for children available. Try a different one.
