But I mean it in a good way! This is, without any shadow of a doubt, the most intensive workout DVD I've ever tried (and I have a good few, including Davina, Nell McAndrew, The Firm etc etc...) Jillian and her two helpers (one advanced, one 'normal') take you through three 20 minute workouts - Levels 1, 2 and 3. Each workout is made up of three circuits which comprise of 3 minutes of weights, 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of ab work.

Like me, you may well be thinking this sounds reasonable, quick and easy. It isn't! Even Level 1 is an intensive workout - lots of jumping jacks, squats, bum kicks etc., and Jillian doesn't let up for a second, constantly keeping you moving. I found I had to use lighter weights than I would for a Davina workout; the exercises are so quick and intense that I couldn't keep up with my usual ones. The exercises have a real 'military' feel and change quickly, and you are given plenty of instruction and encouragement. The music isn't great, but then you probably won't have the energy to think much about it while you're doing this workout!

Levels 2 and 3 contain harder exercises (such as burpees, mountain climbs, jumping jacks from the plank position). I've got a passable fitness level, but on finishing Level 2 I was in a collapsed screaming heap on the floor, thoroughly worked out! Jillian screams at some point in Level 2 "I want you to feel like you're gonna DIE!" - and if you're anything like me, you will! On the plus side, if you can do Level 2, I don't think you'll find Level 3 too much of a difference in intensity, unless you have weak abs as this section pushes them to the limit.

This is a fantastic workout to try if you're looking to push yourself hard, but it is NOT for the faint hearted.

Great DVD! I have done the complete 30 days working my way through levels 1-3 and although I have more weight to lose I have toned up quite a lot. The biggest difference is the top of my legs are a lot smaller and toned and I can feel muscle in my arms (which I've never had!) In all I am feeling more toned all over! I am going to continue to do the level 3 as I really enjoy it, Gillian really motivates you especially when you're about to give up! If you give it 100% then you will get a lot out of it. Also if you have a bit more to lose then it will probably take you more than the 30 days but keep going and I'm sure you'll get to your goal :)

This really does help you lose weight. I did it most days and still got results. In about 2 months I lost around a stone. You can make the workouts as tough as you want or as relaxed as u want. X

In January 2011, I decided to do something about my increasingly large writer's bottom, and the 30 Day Shred seemed the ticket. I could give up an hour of writing for 30 days. So I ordered it, vaguely recognising Jillian's name.
To my surprise, the dvd only lasts 20 minutes per level. I didn't need to give up any writing time. I started with Level 1 (beginners) and giving a little more each day, I gradually progressed up to level 3 (advanced) by the end. I was very impressed to see my over all fitness improve and really enjoyed the buzz from working out. There is a certain amount of satisfaction in being able to do exercises where you died before!
It is a Boot Camp style workout -- so squats, lunges, jumping jacks, planks etc. (I have two left feet so the format suits me) Jillian combines several exercises in one to give a maximum burn. However, do not be afraid to step touch until you are ready to progress further. The important thing is to give it your all. It is about YOU and your fitness.
I didn't lose 20 lbs in 30 days, but I did go down a dress size (which is more important). At the end of the 30 Days, I went jeans shopping and was able to easily fit into a pair of skinny jeans as well as jeggings without looking like the back end of a bus. I also tossed away 3 bin bags of fat clothes. I am not going back there. If you are on twitter, a number of people use the #30dayshred hash tag to report their progress in case anyone feels the need for accountablity.
I found Jillian Michaels throughly motivating (tough but with a lot of heart) and have progressed to doing her 6 week six pack flat abs fast which is a definate step up from the 30 Day shred. And look forward to doing her other dvds. I have continued to see my fitness improve and my measurements decrease.
It is not easy, but it is rewarding. In order to combat flab, sometimes you have to SWEAT and this dvd inspires you to do just that.
