Saintcrow's work tends to be steeped in the seamy side of life and her heroines are tough, resourceful in the extreme, but vulnerable. Combine this with the workings of the supernatural underworld in an alternative earth full of hellspawn, weres of various species, and cops and vigilantes who patrol the bad sides of town, and you have the Jill Kismet series.

Violence and brutality are the word for all these books, whether Jill is dealing with them or dealing them out. This series is not for the faint of heart, but it's a cracking good read for those who like tough-chicks-with lots of guns, guts, and grimness.
