Book Description

Islam has increasingly been the subject of gross misunderstanding. One main aspect of this phenomenon has been the association of Islam with violence and aggression. This is particularly epitomized in the widespread misinterpretation of the Islamic concept of "jihad".

Some Muslim individuals and groups have misused and abused the term "jihad" to describe their violent activities, which greatly vary in nature and context. This has played a major role in spreading incorrect information about jihad. The media, in turn, have failed to make a distinction between such misleading views and informed explanations of jihad. This unholy alliance of misinformation and publicity was bound to result in widespread misunderstanding of jihad.

Studies of Islam in general, including the subject of jihad, have also been blighted by improper use of secondary religious and historical sources. While the Qur’an is universally accepted as being the undisputed authentic source and authority on all aspects of Islam, the authenticity, reliability and value of other sources have always been matters of debate, and even controversy, among scholars. The failure to take this major difference between the Qur’an and other sources into account and to treat those sources with due caution can only result in misunderstanding Islamic concepts and practices.

In its endeavor to present the truth about jihad and dispel common fallacies about this Qur’anic concept, this book goes back to the source: the Qur’an. It shows that jihad in the Qur’an is nothing like the common image of this concept.

Unlike its mundane representation, jihad is a spiritual path that creates a better human being and a better world. Contrary to its violent image, jihad is the ultimate way to peace.

Obviously, this is a timely book. It's also a very humane book. Dr Fatoohiargues, to non-moslems and fellow moslems alike, that violent warfare andsuicide- homicide bombs are contraventions of Islamic teachings bybypassing the madmen of Al-Queda and Abu hamza and going straight to thesource-book, the Koran. I'm not a moslem (I'm an athiest) but I'm sickand tired of the way the press try to drive a wedge between the Islamicand non-islamic population. I've given 2 copies of this book to madchristian fundamentalists I know who claim that Islam promotes violence.Everyone - moslems or not - should read this book. After all, what *is* sofunny about peace, love and understanding?

What distinguishes this book from others on the subject is its focus on the meaning of jihad in the Qur'an. I do not think that other Islamic sources should be ignored, but I also think that it is important to study the meaning in jihad in the Qur'an and other sources separately in order to be in a better position to understand the real meaning of this concept and see how it may have developed over time.

This is not a purely religious book. In its study of the misunderstanding of Jihad among Muslims and non-Muslims, the book often examines political factors that came to play a major role in determining how jihad is interpreted and presented.

The book is not very long, but it does cover the topic in considerable depth. Its is easy to read and does not require any prior knowledge of Islam or the Qur'an.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning in detail the meaning of jihad in the Qur'an, and how this Qur'anic concept relates to our increasingly complex world today.
