Product Description

Set against the sweeping backdrop of the ancient Holy Land, Jezebel is a tale of love, loss and deceit - and one woman’s struggle to survive in a land filled with rivals plotting her downfall…

Her name is iconic. Her courage extraordinary. Her story remarkable.

Jezebel, a young princess of Tyre is destined to be married to King Ahab of Israel. Yet she is determined to rule her own life and begins an illicit affair with Jehu, a visiting prince at court.

Years pass and Jehu, unable to relinquish his love for Jezebel grows bitter and twisted. But he is unaware of Jezebel's greatest secret – that he is father to her eldest son Ahaziah, the heir to Israel's throne.

With the King's health deteriorating, Jezebel gradually assumes control of Israel but hatred of her is spreading across the land, fanned by the prophet Elijah and his aide, the terrifying Elisha. As they plot her downfall, Jezebel must find her inner strength and fight for her beliefs against all odds.

Set against the sweeping backdrop of the Holy Land comes an epic tale of one of the most courageous and controversial women of all time. Jezebel will enthral fans of The Red Tent and The Borgia Bride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 8 Feb 2012

I thought this book was fantastic. It totally took me into that time period, gave me a great inside into how the story of Jezebel might have been and made me feel like I was there at the time. I looked it up later and for sure some of the 'facts' were different, but honestly, who knows anyway what actually happened.
Anyone who loves historical fiction that makes you feel like you're actually there and isn't too fussy about whether it is exactly per the historical 'facts' that we think we know about the past, will love this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointing 30 July 2013
By Lomax
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Let me first state my position vis a vis the bible. The history books (Kings, Chronicles etc) are useful source materials but in no way definitive. The bible authors wrote history the way Herodotus did - from a single and rather biased point of view.

Jezebel the novel differs quite radically from the biblical account. This is fair enough - if it followed the bible slavishly, there would be little point in writing it. My complaint with the novel is that it's so badly written.

Just about every character in this novel is a cardboard cut-out. Ahab is saintly, Jehu is the archetypal bad-boy lover, Elija and Elisha are the Osama bin Laden and the Abu Hamza of the ninth century BC (OK, I have little time for prophets, but surely these guys had SOME redeeming features?). Jezebel herself is - well, who cares? And that's the point, and the major failing of the novel. Jezebel is neither likeable enough or interesting enough to carry the story-line. And the ending falls as flat as she does.

The book is carelessly written as well. If you start a section with the words "Five years later" and reveal within a page that one character has aged seven years since the previous chapter - well, that's unforgiveable. Later, we have one the great sentences of all time - "[Jezebel] took his beard in hers." Page 305 if you don't believe me.

There is a map in the book which is intensely annoying. Towns and regions are included on the map but not mentioned in the text; whilst key locations in the text are not depicted on the map. Criminal.

Basically, this book was an attempt to do Mills and Boon meets the Old Testament. It fails.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! 27 May 2012

Excellent book and I don't care how much was based on fact or fiction - it was a good read about a woman I'd heard of and a Nation I knew a little about.
The link to Christian prophets and their single minded evotion to one God by enforcing their beliefs on people was fascinating. (I'm a Catholic and have no problem with reading about the religious fanaticism of some people to 'convert' the heathens!)
A revelation of jealousy and sad ending - but well worth it. Now I'm about to start on 'Delilah'!

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down 4 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I decided to give it a try as the e-book version was only 99p and so glad I did. It's very well written. I finished it in a couple of days and if not for having to go to work I'm positive I would've gotten through it in one. I'm sure there's a lot of fiction in it but it's fine if you like a good story and aren't too bothered with facts. I'm going to read 'Delilah' next. I hope the author will write other similar novels as most historical fiction writers will not tackle this time period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting historical fiction 16 Nov 2013

Enjoyed reading this enormously - such a different view from the usual scathing opinion of this character, whose name we may know but whose story was untold.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite true to character
Paints Jezebel in a quite a positive light especially as her reputation goes before her. Don't think she is the wronged character this book makes her out to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read
I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. I have started researching Jezebel's life as the book is fascinating, although being fiction, deviates from the real story.
