It was surprising to read given the author's background and time, but it is refreshing to see that it was not simply brushed under the anti-semitic rug to be lost for all time!

I'm sure loads of people are read to play the "anit-semitic" card! But keep in mind the Jews are not the only semites in the world!

However, I didn't like the abreviated translations in certain parts... I would have liked to read the whole translated text! A bit short for my taste!
Also, some images at the end of the book have German captions, I would have like to have seen them translated too.

My interest in this book was to compare the reasons given by Luther hundreds of years ago with the reasons given more recently for the negative reaction to Jews. Luther has been, like other critics of Jewish financial practises since, labelled an anti-semite, but I doubt if he was.

Martin Luther has been lambasted for writing 'The Jews and Their Lies" primarily for political reasons and in ignorance of Luther's political and theological mind-set at the time he wrote it. Yet it is impossible to understand Luther's historical context without understanding his mind-set and his combination of theological and political condemnation without understanding what Luther stood for. Self-serving organisations dishonestly quote-mine Luther's writing as an excuse to criticise Christianity and promote their own version of 'free-thought' which is every bit as intolerant as Luther and for similar reasons - the tendency of human beings, not just those with religious convictions (unless Marxism is regarded as a religion), to judge the world from their standpoint rather than conduct an in-depth analysis of their own position before criticising others.

Luther's interpretation of the Jewish history was based on his understanding of Jews as God's 'chosen people' and their rejection of that role in their rejection of Jesus Christ as the Messiah. In his view the Jews had failed to learn the lessons of history or draw the correct conclusion from 1400 years of exile. He argued the fall of Jerusalem was God's judgement and concluded, ' for such terrible wrath of God is sufficient proof that they certainly must be in error and doing wrong......this wrath leads to the conclusion that the Jews are certainly rejected by God and are not his people anymore and He also is not their God anymore'. Yet the Jews had failed to repent of their sins.

He argued Jews were arrogant in rejecting Jesus as the Messiah and reducing Christ's role in world history. They were boastful of their own ancestry, regarding non-Jews as heathens.

Roll up!! Roll up!! Hear the mighty word of god as preached via the holy spirit through the holy mouth of St Luther!!

Read the handbook German Evangelical Christians waved around in support of the Third Reich!! Find out why Dr Martin Sasse and his prancey dancey pals saw Kristallnacht as a "mighty work of god"!!

It's all here!! From burning down the houses schools and synagogues of unrepentant Jews, to the rounding up and killing of Rabbis who dare to preach their own religion!!

Glory in the verbal dexterity of the man who gave us the infantile dogma of "biblical authority"!!

Like his other wondrous handbook "How I stirred up a Peasant's uprising and then sided with the authorities in having them slaughtered in the name of Jesus", it shows his sublime religious meditations for what they are!!!

Don't miss out!! Should be up there with "Paradise Lost" and "The Divine Comedy"!!

Thank you Martin Luther for bringing us God's most holy word on this subject!!

Recommended read. As with other books on the subject the messenger gets accused of the very crime he's trying to report.

“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” John 15:18

Context is everything. Without it those trying to spread the truth can appear paranoid, unhinged and hateful. When one realises that both Islam and Christianity are counter strategies to radical Judaism the picture becomes much clearer.

For a man who translated the Bible into German, I don't know how Martin Luther could ever have written this book. A good review of the book of Romans would have reminded him that Christians are not to mistreat Jews.

There is no New Testament command to burn sysnagogues, turn Jewish people into manual laborers, restrict their travel, etc. It just plain isn't there.

Jews are neither angels nor devils. They're people. There are good ones, bad ones, and those in between just like any other group. I've met Jewish people whom I've like very much and others who have been hard to like -- again, just like any other group. I recognize the right of Israel to exist as a nation, but I'm not saying that I agree with every decision it makes. However, there is nothing -- and I repeat NOTHING -- in the New Testament that allows mistreatment of Jews.

Martin Luther wrote many deep spiritual things, most of them very much worth reading.

However, this book is not one of them -- unless you want to read a book on how NOT to treat the Jewish people.
