Very much US-focused, as many of the For Dummies books tend to be, but still good as a basic "how-to" resource for beginners anywhere, and possibly for those with some experience who're looking for new techniques.
The quality of the photographs, even those in colour, is very poor, and there was a significant number of "typos", but the diagrams and text were clear and easily followed. I'd like to have seen a little more in-depth exploration of some of the methods, and more sample projects to work on.
Overall, a good resource for beginner beaders; does exactly what it says on the tin.

Like all immediate choices to start learning something i thought 'a dummies guide' would be the best book to learn how to make jewellery. But I was quite wrong in getting this book. It is badly put together, teaches you the beginning steps through the writers own projects (which are not to everyones taste) and generally only serves as something to refer back to once you've learned the basic skills else where.

It gives lists and details on birthstones and meanings, metals, glues and other things. But it is completely mish-mashed together and you follow it through project after project, again the authors own wondering if you've lost the 'basic steps' page somewhere.

I'm not sure who i would recommend this book too. I am sure there are better alternatives out there, so i would not recommend this to somebody with no knowledge of jewellery making as a place to start. Then again, i don't think i would recommend it to a advanced jeweller either.

Despite some of the negative reviews about this book, I decided to get this one after picking it up in a craft store, but bought it on amazon because it was cheaper!
It may be US-orientated, but the information is plentiful and useful nevertheless. It is really comprehensive so will be an essential for the jewellery/beading novice that I am. It covers everything a beginner like me needs; including the essentials such as threading and finishing, the different types of beads available and a really good section on starting your own business which includes ideas such as holding a beading party for your friends. The images may be outdated but the lively and helpful instructions certainly arent. Worth buying.
