Engraving script the old school way,

In nowadays world of jewelry making most engraving is done by machine driven equipment. This 'how-to' book from Hardy and Bowman is about the old school of hand engraving, predominantly dedicated to engraving script. The book contains step-by-step tutorials for learning hand engraving of various script types and discusses the basic tools. Part of the book is dedicated to techniques, e.g. how to: - harden, temper and sharpen engravers; - hold an engraver; - work with workpiece holders; - create various cut forms and types. Although somewhat outdated in places, I would recommend this book to anyone keen on learning the basic concepts of hand engraving script and monograms.

This book was very useful. It give good detail on how to do engraving. My favorite part though was the fact that it covers in detail, care and sharpening of the tools used

We have a Jewelry shop - [...] is one of our sites - we have found this book to be a great basic handbook and reference. It is a good guide on tools and their care. The only comprehensive reference I have found on sharpening gravers. I am a jeweler. My husband is the engraver. I keep a copy by my bench too. Engraving makes each item personal and must be done with skill + care. The book is a big help.

For anyone who engraves or is just curious about the process this is a very interesting book. 'We' have a jewelry store in Darien, Connecticut 06820 called Baubles. We engrave many items of jewelry plus iPods Cell phones, Corporate Gifts and even computers- and to everyone who works their magic in that engraving room, I gave them a copy of this book.
When people buy a silver box and monogram it or have a name written across it- it becomes more than a gift. This book helps with all types of ordinary tasks or if you have ever wondered why about all things engraving. |
