Book Description

1985
Nearly ten years in preparation and production, "Jewelry Concepts and Technology" is the definitive guide and handbook for jewellery makers on all levels of ability. It is also a unique reference source for those not directly active in the field but who wish to gain an understanding of what lies behind the jewellery-making mystique. All traditional as well as innovative contemporary techniques are thoroughly described, making this. The more than 900 photographs in colour and black and white illustrate work of all degrees of complexity and show the incredible range of concepts which jewellers in all times, including today, incorporate in their work. Historic and ethnic jewellery, as well as contemporary work done by approximately 300 jewellers from twenty-six countries, are grouped under particular technical processes. This arrangement dramatically illustrates the mutual bonds between today's creative jewellers and their colleagues: historic style-oriented, and anonymous, tradition-dominated ethnic jewellers. The detailed text is accompanied by 377 illustrations showing tools and processes used to carry out particular techniques. In addition, thirty step-by-step photo demonstrations show master jewellers working from raw material to finished jewels, some of them revealing their methods for the first time. Supplemented by an extensive index, glossaries of jewellery forms and findings, and an international sources supply list, "Jewelry Concepts and Technology" is indispensable for anyone interested in any aspect of jewellery making.

If you are studying jewellery, are a jeweller or are interested in becoming a jeweller, this is the book to have on your workbench! If it isn't in this book, it probably doesn't exist. It covers everthing you need to know in a technical sense, and even covers tools of the trade. After completing a degree, majoring in Jewellery this reference was a big help, as well as an inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars the jewellery makers bible. 5 Jan 2008
By jokat
Format:Hardcover
Without hesitation I would hail this enormous volume as THE bible for professional jewellers/makers.
I'm not sure what this book does NOT contain about the various jewellery/metalworking proceedures that exsist. I tend to love books in this subject that have lots of pictures/eye candy and inspiration. Although this book is not really a gallery in this way, it does not have lots of glossy coloured pictures of work - there are some, most black and white - but the sheer volume of techniques and methods that are truly explained - in a variety of ways - make this an essential book in this field.
Anything I want to understand or learn about I can find it in here. Its incredible.
It explains traditional methods, modern methods, how you could do something on a budget, or with tools and machines. Its got it all. It gives examples of simple studio set ups, elaborate set ups, the works! I have yet to know all that this book contains but so far it has revealed info on whatever I have searched in it for!
Its a manual. Its a lot of writing and explaining and teaching - so if jewellery making is a hobby for you or something you only dip your toe into then this book probably isn't neccesary. I owned a lot of other jewellery realted books before this one and I think that it was only when I became serious about metalwork and jewellery that I really appreciated what this book can offer.
It is massive and it is functional. So, seekers of the pretty volumes laden with colour pictures and projects - look elsewhere. This is a hard worker book of all of it! Its all about the learning of all the techniques. Those other type of attractive books are brilliant and really inspiring and useful for learning (I own MANY!). This is just more serious and practical. Highly Recommended for all serious jewellers and metalworkers.
