If you are studying jewellery, are a jeweller or are interested in becoming a jeweller, this is the book to have on your workbench! If it isn't in this book, it probably doesn't exist. It covers everthing you need to know in a technical sense, and even covers tools of the trade. After completing a degree, majoring in Jewellery this reference was a big help, as well as an inspiration.

Without hesitation I would hail this enormous volume as THE bible for professional jewellers/makers.
I'm not sure what this book does NOT contain about the various jewellery/metalworking proceedures that exsist. I tend to love books in this subject that have lots of pictures/eye candy and inspiration. Although this book is not really a gallery in this way, it does not have lots of glossy coloured pictures of work - there are some, most black and white - but the sheer volume of techniques and methods that are truly explained - in a variety of ways - make this an essential book in this field.
Anything I want to understand or learn about I can find it in here. Its incredible.
It explains traditional methods, modern methods, how you could do something on a budget, or with tools and machines. Its got it all. It gives examples of simple studio set ups, elaborate set ups, the works! I have yet to know all that this book contains but so far it has revealed info on whatever I have searched in it for!
Its a manual. Its a lot of writing and explaining and teaching - so if jewellery making is a hobby for you or something you only dip your toe into then this book probably isn't neccesary. I owned a lot of other jewellery realted books before this one and I think that it was only when I became serious about metalwork and jewellery that I really appreciated what this book can offer.
It is massive and it is functional. So, seekers of the pretty volumes laden with colour pictures and projects - look elsewhere. This is a hard worker book of all of it! Its all about the learning of all the techniques. Those other type of attractive books are brilliant and really inspiring and useful for learning (I own MANY!). This is just more serious and practical. Highly Recommended for all serious jewellers and metalworkers.

During my studies, I found Untracht's book to be the most comprehensive and useful reference available. Every concept, tool, mixture and procedure is thoroughly explained - also providing ample alternatives and ideas. This book is the ultimate aid to practical, functional and durable jewellery manufacture.

I first received this book as a gift from my family. I use it as a reference manual in my custom silversmithing business. I have been a smith since 1964, but, I still learn something almost everday. Example: the section on Etruscan type of granulation is excellent. anyone considering the purchase of a definitive lifetime reference manual should invest in this book. I also agree with another reviewer that it needs up-dated and the price is a little high with all things considered.

To all who are interested in the art of jewelry, the history, lore, technique, design, and step by step instruction, you won't find a better book anywhere. This book by Oppi Untrect is the bible of gold/silversmiths,beginning, advanced, and master craftsmen, collectors and students of jewelry history. Every topic is clearly detailed, with wonderful pictorial components, with clear concise descriptions and definition, and historical data is included. It's a must for your library.

Oppi's classic work covers jewelry techniques the world over and you won't find a more comphrehensive book available. Many step by step demonstrations by world known jewelers. Well written and photographed. The only shortcoming of this book is that its not up to date as it was published in the 80's and is missing information on current jewelry technology. Despite this fact its still sold for a rather high price tag which personally I find annoying. In my opinion the book should be priced more in the 50 dollar range. I wish Oppi would update this book as alot has happened in the field since its publishing date. Still, this is a highly recommended book and am glad that its in my reference library....Dave Stephens, Art Jeweler

Mr Untracht has a very wide knowledge of his subject and its practitioners. His explanations of tools, techniques and processes are excellent and, although mainly biased toward the American and craft end of the business, is not to be faulted for that. I like it and recommend it.

Untracht presents an encyclopedic guide to jewelry making processes. There are many color and black and white photos and illustrations. These alone are worth its price.
With both design and fabrication issues covered in great detail this book could provide the primary text for one's education in this subject. It makes a great companion text to his other classic book, "Metal Techniques for Craftsmen".
