I've just booked on to a weekend course in jewellery-making. As a complete beginner I wanted an explanation of basic techniques, and an idea of what I can realistically expect to produce. Madeline Coles' book is ideal for me, but also a very useful tool for more experienced jewellers. Tools and techniques are very clearly illustrated, and a glossary explains the arcane language of jewellery. The twenty-five projects are attractive, modern pieces which take the reader through a range of techniques and encourage you to develop your skills. A 'gallery' section shows a few pieces by modern jewellers to spark off design ideas. Above all the format of the book is very practical - the lower part is a techniques section, which can be opened at any page whilst the upper part remains turned to the project you are working on. The spiral-binding means it can sit flat on your work bench. Jolly good show.
