Handy! 11 Feb 2004
Format:Paperback
The other reviewer seems to have their wires crossed a bit - this isnt the book which splits in half, that's "Jewellery" by Madeline Coles. This one is equally good though! Liz Oliver teaches at St Martin's College in london and this shines through in her explanations - so many books tell you to do something without thoroughly explaining it but this one follows every technique step by step, and there's everything from how to solder to how to make a box catch. Each technique has a list of materials and tools which you'll need and the accompanying colour photos guide you through very well.

No wonder Liz has produced so many books, when I was a student at Central and Liz the technician, I was lucky if she'd spare me a minute of her time, she was that busy at her bench with her own work she could hardly pull herself away. However, all her books are really clear and concise in both techniques and design concepts, as well as info on inspiration. This book is a good basic manual of simple projects, well laid out with good sharp photos. I lent my copy to someone and never got it back, so here I am ordering it again. I think her books are friendly and inspiring and really fill a gap in the market.

A Surprise Find. 4 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
Well, the story goes a little like this - I was looking to find a way to learn jewellery making in the comfort of my own home. The internet is very disjointed and often misleading.

I have therefore perused many books that push themselves as the bee-all and end-all of jewellery making techniques - and I must say that I was unimpressed until now.

This book is very clear, concise and explained extremely well. There are references back to previous chapters regarding mixed skill techniques and this only serves to add to the sense of building a skill base from which I can move on from and make my own designs.

It could have done with a few more pics however there are definately enough to help you understand the concept of the technique.

There is little talk of design, but that's a good thing - you need the techniques before you can think about applying them to designs.

A well thought out, laid out and executed book.
