Product Description

On his sixteenth birthday, Thorn Jack steals a curious crystal from the Treasury of a neighbouring settlement in his coming of age rite-of-passage. Returning home, he finds that his younger sister has been kidnapped. He sets out to find her with Racky Jagger, an enigmatic but wordly-wise individual. Their way leads through Judy Wood, a place of mystery and ill-repute. When fifteen-years-old Jewel Ranson's father, a travelling draper, is murdered at a fair, she sets out to avenge him. Accompanied by Rainy Gill, a juggler, she journeys to Harrypark where she becomes involved in a bloodthirsty wager. As she travels, Jewel discovers that she has been gifted with unusual powers. After many colourful adventures and encounters, their separate quests lead Thorn and Jewel to a momentous meeting - and the discovery of a common enemy...

I like books with different voices, so this book appealed to me because Jewel and Thorn take it in turns to narrate. It is about six inch humans. Jewel's father is murdered at a fair, and Thorn's sister is kidnapped with only a feather for a clue, and these events pull them together. . . I've read this series twice and I'd recommend it for any who likes fantasy. I'd say its suitable for 10 and over? If you like books with multiple narrators, I'd say read this, but if you find them too typical, I could understand why you wouldn't like this book. I'd certainly read any other of Richard Poole's books if he ever wrote more - its a shame he hasn't made any other series.

This book makes us consider power, and if it is right to use too much or not, and whether we should use it if it isn't for others' good. It makes you think for a long time, and the idea sticks in your head even when you haven't read the book for ages.

'Jewel and Thorn' is the start of one of the most clever and most compelling plots I have ever read. Its one of those great books that you can't put down, Richard Poole gets straight to the point with no unnecessary parts and every part of the story fits perfectly.

The book begins with Jewel's father being murdered and with Thorn's sister being kidnapped by the same duo (although I won't tell you who!) and although Jewel and Thorn don't know each other, at the end of the book they meet and set off on a quest which continues into 'the brass key' and 'the iron angel'.

An excellent read, not one to miss!

I found the world of Jewel and Thorn, with its six inch tall humans riding rats and living amid the wreckage of the age of the giants (us 'normal' humans) fascinating, both because Richard Poole has created a believable but different world and also because I was caught up in trying to decide what had happened to 'our' world. Where had we gone? How come our buildings were left for our successors to scramble in? What cataclysm had caused The Barrens (desert-like mysterious areas which are visited at your peril, offering hard going, apparitions and real dangers)? And if some animals had been left (rats and rabbits in particular), why no dogs, cats or cows? This is the first book of a trilogy, so I will have to wait for the next two volumes to appear and must contain my impatience till then. Till then, too, we must wait to see what becomes of the relationship between Jewel and Thorn, who take the whole of the first book to meet. Plenty of answers wanted - and well worth waiting for.
