I bought this after purchasing Jewel Match - the original, and thoroughly enjoying it. Great replay value too. In Jewel Match 2 the designers have tried to mix thing up a little with some added features but in doing so they have also dispensed with some features of the first game that I enjoyed.
In this version the game saves jewels - the ones that you connect to complete the game/level, this allows you to buy pieces of various buildings throughout the levels to complete a picture. Seeing as you have to clear the jewels to complete the level anyway this all seems a bit redundant.
There is also a shop where you can buy spells - these are things like clearing a 3x3 grid of squares or a 5x5 grid or even buy an extra life, presumably to help you get through the levels - which would be fine but the system seems to give you lots of superior tile clearing extras anyway without having to buy anything more to clear a level.
The most frustrating thing I have found is how to access the hammer. You have to press the L or R button and hold it down and a small window appears with the hammer on it. Fine. But then there are minuscule little symbols as well - and it is not explained what any of these represent, either in the help section or the booklet . . so you end up madly clicking with the stylus to try and work out what they are. They are actually a variety of extras which include one that will clear a large swathe of tiles - up to 10 or 12 squares. Sounds great but in using it it takes all the challenge out of clearing the level.
And finally - the thing I miss the most from the first version is that when you match the tiles, the broken parts cascade everywhere giving you a feeling of 'yes!' - in this version that doesn't happen at all.
In trying to mix things up a bit, extras have been added which seem to be very gimmicky - taking away from the solid strength of the first version and taking out the excitement and challenge of completing each level. Reminds me of the saying 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.
