Book Description

1 May 2008 Avon Historical Romance
Eli Grayson needs a wife - or at least, a woman willing to pretend to be his wife. So, he convinces longtime friend Jewel Crowley to play the part. After all, it's only dinner, and if this is what it takes to save his newspaper, so be it. They'll part ways at the end of the night and that will be that. But, all their plans are turned upside down when Eli's new partner announces their marriage to the whole town. Now, the wild Jewel and the womanizing Eli have to try to make a go of it if he wants to keep his job - and she wants to keep her reputation. But, what started as a marriage of convenience soon becomes so much more and the couple must decide if they are willing to risk everything to see where their passion leads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, simple story 12 Oct 2008
By Denny
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Ok sweet and simple. Simple as in not much drama happens till near the end of the story. The writer returns to Grayson Grove where Vivd is set but the hero this time is Nate's cousin Eli. A reformed drunk, former adulterer and wanna be newspaperman is 'forced' to marry his stepsister Jewel due to circumstances. The romance between the two is sweet and Jewel turns a girlish crush into woman's love and passion. A secondary romance occurs between the former town madam and Eli's boss. I think they deserved their own story. Compared to other Ms Jenkins novel this is more like a 3 star but compared to other romance stories I give this 4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple and charming historical romance 16 Jun 2008
By Helen Hancox TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a simple and engaging romance set in 1881 in the small town of Grayson Grove. Eli Grayson is a confirmed bachelor whose troubled past seems mostly behind him but whose beloved newspaper has had to close due to lack of funds. When a newspaperman talks about starting up the paper again Eli is thrilled, but it seems that G W Hicks won't trust Eli unless he's a married man. Eli says that he has a wife and then has to persuade one of his lifelong female friends, Jewel Crowley, to agree to masquerade as his wife for one evening meal.

But that one meal with G W Hicks starts something more serious. When the locals hear that Eli and Jewel are married they realise they will have to be married in truth in order to save her reputation. Their marriage starts off without much hope - Jewel has no desire to be one of the many women that Eli carries on with, Eli discovers his wife is fairly independent and wants to get a divorce in due course. Can they both learn to trust each other, and will the return of an unpleasant woman from Eli's past cause irreparable problems to their fledgling relationship?

'Jewel' was an enjoyable book to read with a lighthearted feel. There wasn't too much depth to any of the characters, settings or events but some of the historical situations were interesting and the backdrop of the struggle for rights of black people was well written. It was a gentle romance which will appeal to people who like historical romances and for those who like to read stories with black couples as the hero and heroine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charm, humour and a return to Grayson's Grove 4 Aug 2008
By C. Y. Davidson VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The previous reviewer does this book a diservice. For readers of Ms Jenkins other books, this book gives the opportunity to return to Grayons Grove the fictional town that was the setting for 'Vivid';and is as much
an ideal place to spend some time as Avonlea or Narnia.

Of course since this is a romance, you know there's going to be a HEA, but that is the only predictable part of this story told with the authors trademark humour. The hero is Ellis Grayson a man who is trying to reform himself, years after his affair with his cousin's wife. He's put his promiscuous past behind him, but the town gossips won't let him live down his past.

He finds part of his redemption in his friend Jewel Crowley. There is also added tension is the quiet town with the unwelcome arrival return of someone who is planning to stir up the town's men. And a murder or two to thicken the plot.
