Book Description

‘I have always thought Gleneagles is one of the greatest places in the world to play golf’ – Jack Nicklaus The Ryder Cup is coming home to where it all began; the 40th staging of golf’s showpiece event is returning to Gleneagles, Scotland. Tracing the history of the Ryder Cup back to that famous forerunner match at Gleneagles in 1921, this book intertwines the histories of the coveted prize with the five-star resort’s own rich heritage, on and off the course. Through a series of over 80 in-depth interviews with an array of national and international celebrities, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Sir Jackie Stewart, Andy Murray and Stephen Hendry, Jewel in the Glen reveals what the Ryder Cup and Gleneagles means to them while examining the impact of the tournament on the local community and the wider Scottish society, culture, and economy. With a foreword from golf’s greatest player, Jack Nicklaus, designer of the Ryder Cup 2014 course, The PGA Centenary, and a hole-by-hole guide by Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie, this volume paints a unique and absorbing portrait of Gleneagles and Scottish golf as a whole.

About the Author

Ed Hodge grew up in Perthshire, is a former Gleneagles caddy and employee and has enjoyed a writing relationship with the five-star resort for a number of years. A University of St Andrews modern history graduate with 11 years previous experience as a sports writer in Scotland, Ed is now PR & Media Executive for the Scottish Golf Union. This is his first book. Jack Nicklaus is globally regarded as the greatest golfer of all time. Together with fellow American Arnold Palmer and South African Gary Player, known as the 'Big Three', he is credited with turning golf into the major spectator sport it has become. Nicklaus was a key driver of change for the Ryder Cup, proposing the inclusion of European players to try to even up the competition after another comfortable win for the US over Great Britain in 1977; his influence will be as keenly felt at Gleneagles in 2014 after designing a number of changes to the PGA Centenary Course, where the battle for the Ryder Cup will be fought.

I received "Jewel in the Glen" as a gift but would have purchased it anyway, being a golf enthusiast. A wonderful book to have. The author's report of his interviews and anecdotes gathered from all the greats in the game and from golf administrators really captures the imagination and flavour of the Ryder Cup, culminating in a very informative history of previous encounters. A most enjoyable read and a must-have for every golfer.

The Ryder Cup will bring an almost unprecedented year for Scotland to a close in 2014. As one of the great sporting spectacles of our age, "Jewel in the Glen" manages to whet the appetite, were it ever needed, for what will be a very special tournament on a very special golf course. With effortless writing, fascinating photographs and an engaging array of golf and Scottish sporting greats, the author guides us through the history of Gleneagles and the Ryder Cup, and the profound impact both have had on Scotland and beyond. The format is very accessible whether you are looking to read cover-to-cover, dip in and out the countless curious and wonderful photographs and stories, or fact check and reference some great golfing or Gleneagles trivia.

"Jewel in the Glen" is an essential read for 2014 if you have the slightest interest in golf, Gleneagles or the Ryder Cup. If it needs any further endorsement, Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond recently listed this book as his book of the year! High, and worthy, praise indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jewel in the Glen - Gleneagles and the Ryder Cup 26 Nov. 2013
It is just like it says on the cover - a jewel of a book. I have read Jewel in the Glen and it is excellently written. Full of interesting facts and photographs. Ed Hodge has a very easy style and has done a huge amount of research for Jewel in the Glen. There are some memorable quotes from a multitude of golf greats and those who just love the game of golf. It is not just a book about Gleneagles, it sets the scene for the whole 2014 Ryder Cup starting with a chapter on the stunning victory at Medinah. I think Jack Nicklaus will have enjoyed it too.

This book offers a bright and fascinating insight into both the Ryder Cup and The fabulous course at Gleneagles. Written by someone who is almost an insider at Gleneagles and drenched with input from Golf's royalty.
A glittering read for anyone with even a slight interest in the game and it's most famous venue.
