Product Description

Review

'I found the book eminently readable, will find it very helpful and will advocate it to students … and colleagues. One can think of many other engineering topics that would benefit from books having the lucid style and up-to-the-minute credibility of this well-priced one.' Ray Whitford, Institute of Mechanical Engineering

'As an introductory guide to design, and an indication of why modern engines are 'how they are', this book deserves to be used wherever aircraft propulsion is taught. Like a good jet engine, it has the potential for future development and updating in new versions and should enjoy a long and useful life.' Frank Armstrong, The Aeronautical Journal

Product Description

This is the second edition of Cumpsty's excellent self-contained introduction to the aerodynamic and thermodynamic design of modern civil and military jet engines. Through two engine design projects, first for a new large passenger aircraft, and second for a new fighter aircraft, the text introduces, illustrates and explains the important facets of modern engine design. Individual sections cover aircraft requirements and aerodynamics, principles of gas turbines and jet engines, elementary compressible fluid mechanics, bypass ratio selection, scaling and dimensional analysis, turbine and compressor design and characteristics, design optimization, and off-design performance. The book emphasises principles and ideas, with simplification and approximation used where this helps understanding. This edition has been thoroughly updated and revised, and includes a new appendix on noise control and an expanded treatment of combustion emissions. Suitable for student courses in aircraft propulsion, but also an invaluable reference for engineers in the engine and airframe industry.

A very good book though, i would only recomend this book for a person who is either a fanatic about aircraft and military engines or one who is studying an aerospace degree in aircraft engines ( due to the mathematical equations).

The book was well detailed describing the parts of the engine and how each part is manufactured including its limitations. As i am studying a National Diploma in Aerospace Engineering, i would not recomend one who is on the same course level to buy this book. The reason why i baught the book was because i am very interested in the design of the engines. There are many pictures present in the book to make it extra detailed and lively.

Dont get put down after reading my views about this book, it is a very good book, explaining many things about the engines. Hence if you really would like to buy this book, go for it!!!

P.S The delivery was sent quicker than the predicted date, thanks Amazon!!

Really helpful 30 Sep 2000
By Claudio Bompadre - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book keeps up with the promise in the title. It is a easily readable guide to design and perfomance of jet engine with a rigorous treatise of each field, even if the level remains simple.

In fact the mathematical exposition is quite accessible, without a full analytical presentation. Nevertheless the formulae are clearly given with an effective theorical background when needed. Since the volume target is to clarify ideas and principles, each topic is attractively examined, emphasizing the qualitative treatment over the quantitative analysis to improve understanding of physical phenomena. This facet is quite useful because it allows an overall comprehension in mastering design process of jet engine. Besides, the emphasis on having a clear picture of principles provides the basis for a fair evaluation of engine perfomances under real conditions.

As a guide or a reference, this work has neatly achived its goal.

Outstanding Book 4 April 2007
By Elijah Chingosho - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is an outstanding book by a knowledgeable author that provides the basic know-how and skills that an aeronautical or mechanical engineer with an interest in jet propulsion will find useful and helpful. The book is well written in a readable and easy to follow format that provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of jet propulsion. The author clearly presents the concepts, principles and design issues of modern gas turbine engines.

The reader will learn the various components of a jet engine including the intake design, compressors, turbines, combustion chamber designs, and the jet pipe and how thrust is produced as well as the physics and thermodynamics that go with these.

The book has great explanations, diagrams and figures that the reader will find useful and helpful. I recommend the book to engineers wishing to learn more about the jet engine.

Jet Propulsion Books 21 Oct 2011

Book is fine, however I ordered on 17 books on September 19. I am still waiting to receive 9. The vendor told me that they would have all books in three weeks. I accepted this statement, understanding that the class that started October 6 would have to wait. Class is over and they are still waiting.
