"Jesus Walk, Beginning the Journey" is a practical, easy-to-use study and discussion guide designed for small groups or individuals to use in discipling those with new commitments to following Jesus Christ. Dr. Wilson sets out the basic foundational truths new believers need in order to grow in their faith, and he couples these with practical step-by-step applications to be experience with the mentor. These partially include Scripture memory verses done together, being baptized, taking part in Christian fellowship and worship, praying (including various aspects of prayer), giving one's testimony, and establishing a daily quiet time and Bible reading. Although a mature believer can take a new believer through these topics on his or her own, without a book such as this, I have found the book gives the new believer something he or she can read through on his or her own, and helps to keep us on the core topics as the new believer often has a myriad of questions to ask and it can be easy to not establish a strong foundation if one gets sidetracked into peripheral and controversial issues. This book helps one stay on track. Dr. Wilson is not dogmatic in areas where there is controversy, and leaves the doctrinal issues on which denominations differ up to the church leadership of the new believer's fellowship. Christians of any denomination would be able to use this beginners' handbook. I am happy to find a new, easy to use text for working with new believers that does not take a narrow doctrinal viewpoint. Dr. Wilson also makes each chapter available for on line video viewing should the participants wish to add the audio and visual element to their study times.
