Product Description

Product Description

This title is a new presentation of the argument that no historical Jesus existed. This is a full and comprehensive survey of the question through an examination of the early Christian record, canonical and non-canonical, from Q to the Gospels, from the earliest Pauline epistles to the second century apologists, along with Jewish, Gnostic, and Greco-Roman documents of the time. The philosophy of the era, its religious expression in the pagan mystery cults, fascinating glimpses into the historical background of the period, an in-depth consideration of the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, are only some of the additional topics covered in the book. A richly-detailed, highly lucid and entertaining account of how Christianity began without an historical Jesus of Nazareth, who came to life only on the pages of the Gospels. While based on the author's work for "The Jesus Puzzle" website, the book is almost entirely an original writing, not a compilation of website articles. Like the website itself, the book has been styled for the general reader, though the scholarly community will find it of value as well.

Fascinating 21 Nov 2009
By blofeld
Format:Paperback
I found this to be a very interesting read and introduction to a highly contentious issue. My only real criticism is that the book feels slightly back to front, dealing with first with Pauls influence on the teachings of the spiritual christ rather than the gospels account of the actual personage of christ. Whatever the truth as to Jesus's existence it certainly seems the case that his historical presence can at best be described as elusive.

This is a very interesting and thorough examination of the lack of evidence for a historical Jesus. The section on the Pauline letters is detailed and comprehensive - however, if I was being critical I would say the section is perhaps a little laboured and occasionally repetitive as Doherty makes his case. that said, it is very thorough and hard to argue with his findings for what he calls "The Jerusalem Tradition" of a mythical saviour son. The subsequent sections are eminently readable and similarly thorough, detailed and comprehensive. Overall, an excellent introduction to this area and adds much to the debate on the historicity of Jesus.

A good start... 8 July 2005
By Matthew
Format:Paperback
Earl Doherty has produced a very refreshing look at the early origins of Christianity, and provides some very compelling arguments for his thesis. There is, of course, little point reading this book if one is convinced that in the existance of an historical Jesus of Nazareth, and are unwilling to even entertain the alternative. On the other hand, the effect of this book on a self-confessed Christian with a more open can be a fatal blow to ones faith. I must admit, however, that it was not the book per se that convinced me that this thesis is compatible with the known evidence, but more the further discussions found on the author's website. This book gives a good basis for the argument, but I hope that Mr Doherty can be persuaded to produce an extended second edition sometime soon.
