I read this book over 20 years ago. It truly changed my life.
At the time I was a born again Christian having been persuaded to take that unquestioning leap of faith. My problem was how to reconcile that faith with a scientific education and a very rational disposition. I became worried about how heavily Christianity depended on the "authority of the scriptures". I started reading the history of the early church and researching the history of the new testament. Who decided what books to include? What about all those (very interesting) apocryphal books?
Humphrey Carpenter's book came as a breath of fresh air. It really stands out as the only truly objective historic analysis that I have ever found on the topic.
If you are a committed Christian, beware, it may lead you to a more rational viewpoint. It may prove a little traumatic to find that what you were taught in Sunday school is based on relatively modern interpretations and "traditions". It isn't really based on what Jesus said or taught.
Highly recommended.

Jesus in his historical aspect!

This book is one of the best books written about Jesus in his historical aspect,it tells that how Jesus reacted against Jewish Halakha's domination during his lifetime and how evident, authentic and logical could all acclamation about Jesus be? how was his attitude toward Torah?
There are even more outstanding glances and points of view regarding Jesus: What could the origin of his miracles be? What was the exact difference between Jesus and a first-century-rabbi according to Jesus wrods' principles? How much was Jesus influenced by The Old Testament's books or books such as Daniel?
The author furthmore tries to answer some good questions about Jesus and his prophecy: How did Jesus view himself? Did he really think he was Jew's Messiah? or even a divine prophet? What was his aim? And it's really applausive when you find out that Carpenter tries to answer these questions according to four gospels, and their verity as Jesus's words. Yet it's notable to say that the author discusses everything about gospels(Mark,Mathew,Luke,John) and their differences in the first chapter, which is the gate of a new world opened to the reader who turns the first page...
