Another terrific book from Paula Fredriksen - scholarly, patient, readable, suspenseful, and sane. This work reprises themes from her earlier 'From Jesus to Christ', bravely pointing out that in some ways her opinions had changed between the two books. It is particularly interesting and admirable for her careful analysis of the way the four Gospels differ, presenting an evolving story which is set in a changing series of historical contexts. Indeed historical context seems to me very much Fredriksen's special contribution to Jesus studies.

I'm sorry I can't do it full justice in a review. I'll just say that the book builds to a wonderful climax in Jerusalem. I won't spoil the story. Read it!

And excellent historic work that is an effortless read. So much so that Fredriksen's lyrical weave-of-words makes her scholarly prose a work of art. I have read many fine efforts that search for better understanding of the life and death of historic Jesus. This is the best.
