Richard Bauckham is a respected scholar, who has written many fine books. He writes from a conservative position, but is still an innovative thinker. I think the most important teaching in this volume is a lucid explanation of how early Christians, and of course Christians today, can hold Jesus to be divine, and yet insist they are monotheistic, remaining true to to their Jewish roots. This concept is something both Jews and Muslims find difficult to grasp, but the author explains clearly that the divinity of Christ does not destroy Christian monotheism. Although not the subject of the book, the reader can also see how the Holy Spirit fits in with monotheism. I would recommend this book to Christians and non-Christians, if they wish to get a better understanding of this subject.
