This intriguing book offers various texts on Jesus from outside of Christianity. It covers responses from Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism - ranging from selections from the Talmud and the Qur'an, to Hindu poetry and a Sinhalese folk tale inscribed on palm leaves (in which, quaintly, Jesus' grave is constructed with the aid of elephants).
The selections are conveniently grouped by religion (in roughly chronological order), and provide a range of responses, from praise to polemic, which not only provide different perspectives on the figure of Jesus, but also offer insights into the different religions they represent. Indeed, as each extract speaks very firmly of the context in which it was written - during the persecution of Jews in medieval Spain, for instance, or the colonial rule of India - they each offer a fascinating glimpse into the conflict and dialogue between different religious traditions.
