Product Description

Lorcan Dillon was seven years old when his mother, Jayne, first heard him say 'I love you.' The words were not directed at her, but at Jessi-cat, the family pet. Lorcan suffers from autism and selective mutism, a condition that renders him unable to speak in certain situations, unable to express emotions or enjoy hugs and he has never told anyone he loves them. This all began to change with the arrival of a kitten named Jessi-cat. Jessi-cat is the stirring tale of how the affection and attention of a constant loving companion allowed a little boy to start to connect to the world around him. Lorcan spends hours playing with her, cuddling her and telling her how much he loves her. He has also begun opening up to others, making friends at school and is constantly making progress. Jessi-cat proved so inspiring that she was named Best Friend and National Cat of the Year 2012 by the Cats Protection Awards. This book charts the story of this great friendship and how the love between a young boy and his pet has changed his life forever. (Large Print Edition)

This is the story of a young boy who has faced several problems in his short life including selective mutism, a little known anxiety disorder, and his friendship with a beautiful Birman cat. As all cat lovers know there is a special connection between children and adults on the autistic spectrum and cats in particular. A nice read. Gorgeous cat, not surprised she was Cats Protection National Cat of the Year and also Best Friend. Double winner! It's good also that the book raises awareness of selective mutism and Cats Protection.

A very moving story, of a young child's improvement in social interaction after his friendship with a lovely affectionate Cat. Animals are very important to me, incredibly reliable companions.

What a beautiful story of Lorcan & Jessi-cat. The tale fetched a lump to my throat on numerous occasions. I think it's incredible how Jessi-cat knew Lorcan is a child with special needs & needed her help in coping with his selective mutism & Aspergers. I'm sure she will help him & be there for him for many many years to come. Cats truly are special. =^..^=

I am a proud owner of a Blue Birman Boy Cat and I was so pleased to hear about this lovely book. I have enjoyed every page and have just given a copy of the Hard Back to my two grandsons. Birmans are, as once described to me, as "the most fearless cats" They have the most wonderful natures and very loyal and fun-loving. Jayne Dillon has written about her boys and Jessi-Cat in the most moving and endearing way. Thank you. Maggie Maltwood.

It took me a while to get into this book, but I did enjoy it.It was very heart warming and interesting to learn about autism and selective mutism. My cat is called Jessie too, but nothing like this cat unfortunately.

A very warming story of a mother's unfailing determination that her son should receive the special education which he so obviously needs. It also tells of the difference their Birman cat has made to not only to the lives of the family, but more especially to the life of her son Lorcan.

I bought this book as a Christmas present for a friend who simply adores cats(I'm more of a doggy person). I took a sneaky peek as the little boy caught my interest because I work with children. I ended up reading the whole book and telling my friend who bought her own copy which is now at a reduced price (I've kept hers)!
I've worked with many children with different communication difficulties but there seems to be little support for those with selective mutism and a lot of ignorance surrounding this debilitating condition. It was interesting to read about it from a mother's point of view as she courageously battles for her child to live a happy, normal and fulfilling life. Mum's decision to get a kitten, Jessi-cat, enriched the family's life in so many ways. Top read about a top cat!!
