This is a photographic history of Jerusalem which brings together a diverse selection of photographs taken by the earliest travel photographers. The author, renowned archaeologist Dr Shimon Gibson, has unearthed a spectacular collection of images that capture Jerusalem and its people as they were at the turn of the last century. This is a unique insight into a crucial period of the city's history.

A Senior Fellow at the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem, working in Israel and Palestine, Dr Shimon Gibson was awarded his Ph.D. on landscape archaeology and the study of ancient field systems. Between 1989 and 1995, he was a staff member of the Palestine Exploration Fund in London where he dealt with the cataloguing of nineteenth-century archival materials and photographs. He has conducted many excavations and field surveys in southern Levant.
