3.0 out of 5 stars Feel good movie making 19 Oct 2006
Format:DVD
This is the strange Kevin Smith film as it's the one that doesn't take place in the View Askew universe and is his first step away from his beloved characters.

This is done to mix effect, because this isn't a bad movie - actually quite enjoy it - but it is definitely his weakest film. There just seems to be something missing in the plot that makes it feel unfinished, plus it's a little cheesy.

I was a bit apprehensive about getting this, but I'm glad I did as it is a good film, even if it does feel a little bit too sugary/feel good at times.

The plot revolves around a man whose wife dies in labour and he is left to raise the kid on his own and subsequently loses his job and has to do something he hates for a living all the while wishing for something more.

The film tries to be more adult, but still has plenty of low brow humour that kind of stands out to be honest with you.

You should see this film if you fancy a dose of feel good, but not if you're a big fan of Jay and Silent Bob.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid and Enjoyable. 17 Oct 2005
By Jimbo
Format:DVD
Unlike the mass Band-Waggon jumpers of this world, who constantly slate this movie when holding it in comparison to Kevin Smith's earlier efforts, Im a fan. I loved Clerks, Dogma, and Chasing Amy for there ascerbic humour and unique storylines, I loved Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back for being, just plain simple laugh out loud comedies. In Jersey Girl Smith made a movie thats just flat out enjoyable, and no comparison to his previous 5 should take away from that. It may not carry his usual edgy dialouge, but the whole point for me is that it doesnt need to. As far as Smith selling out to the mainstream goes, if its the movie he wanted to make then how can he be? The cast( Affleck and Carlin especially) are all excellent, The movie looks superb and it deserves far more recognition that it recieved.

4.0 out of 5 stars AN OVER-LOOKED CLASSIC 4 Mar 2005
Format:DVD
THIS MOVIE IS AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC AND A MUST HAVE FOR ANY COLLECTION. Nobody I know have ever heard of this film, but after they saw it they agreed with me, that it is a lovely, romantic, fairytale of a movie. Jamie Gertz and the lovely Dylan McDermott provide a lot of entetainment. Very funny and sweet. I recommend this dvd to all amazon shoppers!!! ENJOY!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Touching film 7 Oct 2004
Format:DVD
An excellent film, I can not understand why it got so slated at the American box office. There are some very touching points made in this film about how alone people feel when someone close to them dies and the responsibilities which people have to take on when someone close to you die's. Ben Affleck gives a fantastic performance and I feel that J Lo shouldn't have been in the film but hey ho life goes and they made the best of it.

ALL IN ALL A EXCELLENT FILM AND A MUST BUY

4.0 out of 5 stars Worship the early 90s cheese! 23 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I tuned into this film late one night after a drunken celebration of exam results and expected it to be merely a way to pass the time until the room stopped spinning! Not so! I was pleasantly surprised by this endearing romance with engaging performances by the two leads and great support from the actresses playing Toby's friends providing both humour and pathos. A special mention must also be made of the costumes (Barbie would have loved that pink dress!) and the fantastic over-sized accessories and nail extensions so evocative of the era. A great film to watch with your girlie mates with a bottle of wine, though be prepared to shout "where's your copy of The Rules" girl!?" at the screen! The final scene is a masterpiece of cinematic cheese, the perfect finale to a now kitch-seeming take on the tale of Cinderella. Fabulous!

5.0 out of 5 stars FEEL GOOD FACTOR 20 April 2008
Format:DVD
I have owned this film on video for many years and quite happily watch it over and over. You really do feel for the main character, Toby, as she searches for her prince charming. It's the ultimate chick-flick and is very cheesy and totally 80's, but thats exactly why you will love it. I recommend buying this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith becomes a Dad and grows up... 14 Feb 2005
Format:DVD
Jersey Girl flew by at my local cinema. As someone who had seen and largely enjoyed the director Kevin Smith's previous work this surprised me.

Having now seen the film I can confirm that it merited more than one week in the smallest screen at my local multiplex. I think this film suffered for two reasons 1, It is the second outing for the pairing of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez and their 1st, Gigli, was so bad that this film was tainted by association. 2, Kevin Smith is associated with films that appeal largely to teenagers and twentysomethings. In the View Askew universe he became an unlikely icon for the film obsessed, self referential, pop-culture savvy genereation. This involved a lot of swearing and a explicit sexual discussions. There is a big audience that this reputation would put off.

Neither criticism stands up in the face of this film. Jennifer Lopez departs pretty early on and the central romantic lead of the adult narrative goes to Liv Tyler. Also Kevin Smith has moved on from Jay and Silent Bob. Those fans who adored Clerks, Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob strike back will find that this is a different type of film. In terms of Smith's previous work the greatest similarity is to Chasing Amy. It is more thoughtful, more reflective.

Having said that this is still a comedy, albeit with sad undertones. It isn't a straightforward relaxing, cheer yourself up after a bad day, laugh a minute film. It is genuinely touching in places and truly sad in others.

The plot is reminiscent of 90s film Jack and Sarah but with less slapstick. I enjoyed it and think it got a rough ride on its theatrical release. If you have liked Kevin Smith films before and can tolerate a film without Jay and Silent Bob then go on - give this a try.... Read more ›
