Jerry Lee Lewis, fifty-four years old, recently a father for the third time, a husband for the sixth time, three million dollars in debt to the IRS and still alive against all physical odds, is rockin' the joint.
He has an all-star band behind him, including guitarist James Burton, Dave Edmunds and Phil Chin (bass player for Rod Stewart), but he doesn't need them. His hands and voice are three elemental forces in unison.
He has a parade of star guests, including Van Morrison, Brian May (Queen), Stuart Adamson (Big Country) Dave Davies (The Kinks) and John Lodge (The Moody Blues), but he barely acknowledges their presence.
Only one event snares his full attention. A young woman breaks through stage security and whispers something urgently in his ear. Jerry Lee takes her tear-soaked hands in his, and for a moment the band plays on without him. Then she is gone, and he returns to the keyboard with scarcely a flicker of expression.
"The Killer" is on a roll, and nothing can stand in his way.
No recording can capture the full atmosphere of a Jerry Lee gig. In this one, the piano sounds slightly drowned out (with the number of axemen in the band, this is hardly surprising), but the overhead shots of his flying fingers make up for it. A must for all dedicated Lewis fans.
