Moross, with 'Frankie and Johnny', and the accompanying pieces, are of the best representations of 20th Century American music. Within is Bernstein, Copland and Gershwin, with added Kurt Weill. An immediately approachable disc.

Another piece of music that caused a riot at its premieré 18 Feb. 2013
By Philip S. Mann - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
2013 is the 100th anniversary of the first piece of music to cause fistfights in the concert hall. That was Stravinsky's Le Sacre Du Printemps. For the next ten years, riots were common when new 20th century compositions premiered.
George Antheil often packed a pistol at his concerts, for this reason. Another American composer, Jerome Moross, was no exception. His "Frankie and Johnny" ballet was just as controversial at its time. For years, the only recording I ever knew, was the suite from this ballet; the blues movement deleted. This recording is of the complete ballet, plus some vocal pieces of his for which I was not familiar. These other pieces; "Those Everlasting Blues", and "Willie The Weeper", have to be heard to be believed. Moross may have had an ever better grip on afro-american music, than even Gershwin. Moross seems to be mostly remembered for his film scores, but he ought to be remembered for "Frankie and Johnny". Why don't ballet companies keep this in their rosters????
