A worthwhile collection of boogie/disco/funk. Tunes that are new to me and well worth a listen collected by the great BBE label. Expand you musical experience. Great to have mixed and unmixed CDs.
If you are a fan of previous BBE Records compilations then it is quite likely that your expectations regarding output are high, as the label has issued a number of very fine collections, presenting material that is often rare, criminally overlooked, and deserving of greater appreciation. For 'The American Boogie Down' BBE enlists the services of Jerrome Derradji, owner of the 'Still Music' record label, thereby gaining access to the 'Past Due' reissue division of the 'Still Music' catalogue. The aim, as stated on the cover, being to present 'America's lost Disco, Funk and Boogie'.
Like many BBE issues the compilaion features two cds, one mixed and another un-mixed, featuring the same tracks. For the mixed version the vocal talents of an MC Paul Randolph are employed, in a presentational style that looks back to days long gone by. On the un-mixed cd the opening track is 'Get It' by The Morning After. Opening with scatter type guitar licks this quickly moves in to a Disco style groover, replete with 'Oooh Yeah' vocal interjections and lead saxaphone. Followed by The Right Direction's 'Midnight Rhythm' this hints at a funk infused heritage, and is another pleasant groover. The Destiny In Time Band's 'Dance' (1978) is a funk orientated groove with keyboard work pointing towards later synthesised orientated records, whilst Devarne's 'You Are Number One' (1983) is drawn from a DIY ethic of music making away from the musical mainstream (although it suffers when compared against the quality of work available in 1982 and 1983 generally).... 'Get To The Point' by Tony Cook (presenting Vernon Cheely)(1982) suffers as a vocal, but Vernon Cheely and Tony Cook had clearly been listening to the earlier work of the legendary Leeroy Burgess, whose production and vocal flourishes can be heard influencing every aspect of this track.
And this particular feature is common in many of the tracks featured, which are all clearly the work of accomplished musicians who never quite apparently managed to find the 'golden groove' they were obviously seeking. This can be heard in the production of the tracks, which, whilst embracing a number of musical influences, are not distilled down to something clearly original in execution or intention. Some come very close - notably The Fabulous Kings' 'If You Like What We're Doing' (with its catchy opening vocal refrain) and 'Galaxy' by Visions of Tomorrow, which manages to point towards later Electro-Funk inflections.
So. Do you buy?
Sharp eyed readers will notice the stylistic similarities between this issue and BBE's recent 'The Boogie Back' compilation, but sadly, unlike that collection (which I have also reviewed), this has more in common with another BBE release, 'The Real Sound Of Chicago'. Both have a stated intention of presenting forgotten or previously unavailable musical gems, predominantly drawn from black music, and both (curiously) are the work of American compilers. Like 'The Real Sound Of Chicago', this collection is generically named in an apparent attempt to reflect the musical styles contained therein, but nearly all the tracks featured here fail to actualise any specific musical intention, and never quite manage to get it 'right'. It is the case that some tracks have potential, but need re-working or re-editing to achieve their fullest expression. Given the audiences to whom BBE works this may well be the implicit intention behind this release.
More broadly this issue, like many other by the label, is available in a lightweight cardboard double sleeve. This may well reduce production costs but it doesn't last long and doesn't protect the cds particularly well, which tend to slip out and away from the case at the slightest touch. Perhaps BBE could consider using standard cd jewel cases, which whilst not perfect, would do a better job!
This release is for music specialists (perhaps already familiar with the tracks), DJs or completists. For the generalist there just isn't enough quality material here to warrant a recommendation.Read more ›

My only complaint is that this collection is not long enough. I wish there was more. The music complied here is so good. Honestly I would have rather they include another cd of great music instead of having the mix.
