Synopsis
Navin Johnson, a none-too-bright white boy raised by a family of black sharecroppers, somehow manages to reach adulthood without ever discovering he was adopted. His parents finally tell him the truth on his birthday and, shocked by the news, he decides to head off to the big city to seek his fortune. Although he embarks on his odyssey with Candide-like optimism, Navin soon learns the cruel ways of the world as his crazy invention--a device to stop one's glasses from sliding--leads him from rags to riches and back to rags. Steve Martin is riotous in this no-holds-barred broad slapstick comedy, with Bernadette Peters playing his accepting love interest. Jackie Mason, M. Emmet Walsh, and Bill Macy are excellent in small roles, but the focus is always on Martin, who is at his goofy best in a film loaded with hysterical sight gags and a dog whose name cannot be said on television.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Die gas pumper!", 2 Jul 2002
By A Customer
The funniest film ever made - probably. So many scenes of sheer genius and so many lines to bore friends with, this really is a wonderful wonderful film. Steve Martin makes today's contemporary US "comedians" like Adam Sandler look like amateurs. How the hell does ( or sadly, did) he come up with stuff like the "old Cup O'Pizza guy", "Stay away from the cans" and the Opti-grab ( one of history's most useless inventions)?
You will not regret buying this I promise and like all good "art" this film reveals more and more each time you watch it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steve Martin's best movie, 15 Jun 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Jerk [VHS] [1980] (VHS Tape)
The Jerk is an absolute joy to watch. In Navin Johnson, Martin has created a hilariously stupid but loveable star. I'm a huge fan of Steve Martin and love every one of his films but this is definitely my favourite. Even the cover picture on the case had me laughing for ages. It's impossible to dislike this film, you'll laugh till you hurt. Highlights for me are Navin's Thermos song, his hitchhiking skills and his endless enthusiasm and optimism will bring a smile to anyones face. Steve Martin is a comic genius. If you like this then you'll love The Man With Two Brains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly his best movie, 2 Jul 2002

Steve Martin's first, and possibly his best movie. Bernadette Peters is also excellent in this movie. I also love the little song they sing together ("You Belong To Me").

The DVD encoding is not brilliant. If you buy DVD's just for the superior audio and picture quality, get this one on VHS - it seems obvious that no clean-up has been done for the DVD, which was a disappointment for me.
