Product Description

Product Description

I've seen some bat-witted wheezes in my time but this one takes the certificate of merit When Jennings and Darbishire discover a hibernating hedgehog they are instantly intrigued. Then, when Venables tells him that foxes eat hedgehogs, Jennings decides to rescue it. But things rarely go to plan for poor Jennings, and after a series of mishaps involving Miss Thorpe s puppy and a bottle of Ants Anti-Escaping Fluid, Jennings is left wondering whether Old Sleepy will make it through the winter. Clueless clodpoll!

About the Author

A generation ago, Anthony Buckeridge was the equivalent of J K Rowling. His schoolboy hero, Jennings, was as much the talk of ten-year-olds as Harry Potter is now. Anthony Buckeridge was a headmaster and worked in the Fire Service during the war before becoming a full-time writer. Jennings featured in stories he used to tell his pupils.

my gripe is not with Buckeridge...all the Jennings books are funny in a nicely understated way, with great dialog fizzing with marvy slang...which brings me to the problem with this edition...I was a bit surprised to hear Jennings and co. saying "flipping" from time to time. So I ordered an original 70's edition, and found that they used to be saying "jolly"...quite right, I should jolly well think so; these 1990's re-issues are taking a flipping liberty to meddle with the text. If this thing keeps happening, I'll...I'll...well it just better not happen, that's all.
(He finished lamely)

Another enjoyable outing with Jennings and his best friend Darbishire; this time a series of escapades involving a hibernating hedgehog. Who but Jennings could possibly get into trouble with a hedgehog that isn't even awake?

Mr Willkins and Mr Carter, along with Matron and Mr Pemberton-Oakes add to the fun, along with Venables, Temple, Atkinson and all the usual suspects.

I agree with the previous reviewer, that it is a bit annoying to find these books `updated' with some modern slang and phrases, rather than the ones we associate from our childhood with Jennings and his friends. However, it would be nice to think that they brought Jennings to a new generation of readers. So, we grin and bear it.

All round, an enjoyable read; childhood reminiscing brought home again. Cup of tea, anyone?
