Product Description

Ah, yes! Jennings as usual it always is When Jennings starts the second half of the Christmas term by accidentally setting his rubber on fire, it seems the residents of Linbury Court are going to have an exciting few weeks. Along with High Fidelity Telephonic Communication (or two tins and a piece of string), the Affair of the Assistant Masterpiece and Jennings suddenly becoming a musical prodigy, Old Wilkie is definitely not going to get the peace and quiet he was hoping for.

About the Author

A generation ago, Anthony Buckeridge was the equivalent of J K Rowling. His schoolboy hero, Jennings, was as much the talk of ten-year-olds as Harry Potter is now. Anthony Buckeridge was a headmaster and worked in the Fire Service during the war before becoming a full-time writer. Jennings featured in stories he used to tell his pupils.

This is another of the Jennings books that were not available in the 90s when I was young, and I think I can understand why. While it is an amusing story, it mostly focusses on the relationship between Jennings and Mr Wilkins - there's nothing in particular that marks it out as special.

The book is, for once, entirely set within Linbury Court school and doesn't feature any notable guest characters. The usual comedic misunderstandings have dried up a bit though, and much of the plot consists of Mr Wilkins being baffled by his pupils' behaviour.

There's a problem with the printing of my copy (the red and white paperback published by House of Stratus). They've left out the illustrations from the original, but kept the captions for them, which just sit in the middle of the narrative. It was really distracting the first few times until I worked it out. I e-mailed the publishers to point this out but have yet to receive a reply (after 12 days).

Overall I found this to be possibly the weakest and least inspiring of the series. The next few are also ones I've not read yet and I hope they are an improvement as I've been quite looking forward to reading some 'new' adventures.

Jennings at Christmas 27 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
This is the tenth book in the Jennings series and the only one that seriously features Christmas - in what now comes across as nostalgic fashion in a time when toys and games were firmly pre- electronic and making paper chains really was exciting.
The action doesn't really leave the school and there is a somewhat greater emphasis on character development - particularly the love/hate relationship between the hero and his impatient if long- suffering form master Mr Wilkins. As with other books in the series the specialised prep school slang may take a little getting used to but the writing style is excellent.

Jennings as Usual is another excellent Jennings book. A continuity error seems to exist in the number of terms he has remained 11 years old! But all the same, this was another funny work, full of mix ups (som of them somewhat predictable, but hilarious all the same). From teachers instructions taken so literally that the boys get stranded on decoupled train carriages, to observations of spes, and the huge efforts to buy a replacement for a vase accidentally damaged - this book is a slice of childhood life that remains entertaining despite being so clearly dated.
