Body of Evidence,
By
This review is from: Jennifer's Body [DVD] (DVD)
Okay so we're all agreed this isn't classic thoughtful film-making, however if you want a disposable slice of teen horror a la The Faculty [DVD] [1999] or The Craft [DVD] [1996], with attractive stars, plenty of gore, and some quirky performances (J K Simmons' turn as eccentric hook-handed high school principal is hilarious), then you'll enjoy this. The dialogue is often witty, the humour as black as pitch, and the special effects impressive. Grab a bag of popcorn, switch your brain off, and let it wash over you.

Basically just an average horror film with a ridiculously hot female lead,

Oh how I wish Jennifer's Body (the movie) was as appealing as Jennifer's (Megan Fox's) body. Unfortunately, it isn't; what we have here is basically an average horror film that plays everything pretty straight down the middle and never really tries to do anything that would set itself apart from the pack. I wouldn't even give it an R rating - there's no real nudity (sigh), the blood and gore isn't overwhelming, and the story certainly doesn't produce much tension, let alone vicarious scares. If Megan Fox weren't so incredibly hot, I don't think this movie would be getting more than a handful of good reviews. As if the storyline isn't predictable enough to begin with, the movie opens with Jennifer's best friend locked up in a mental institution, reflecting back on the events that put her there. Anita "Needy" Lesnicky (Amanda Seyfried) and Jennifer Check (Megan Fox) are a veritable best friend odd couple. Jennifer's is smoking hot and promiscuous, while Needy is reserved and nerdy. Their dysfunctional relationship begins to change the night that a local bar burns down, killing several of their classmates. Jennifer had dragged Needy there to see a new band called Low Shoulder and to meet the lead singer, whom Jennifer finds incredibly "salty." After the two escape the burning building, Jennifer decides to join the band in their bus and take off to who knows where. Upon her return, she's changed into an uncaring, self-obsessed person. She's also a murderer and a cannibal who must feed to maintain her strength and good looks. The plot never ventures far from the tried and true path of horror predictability. Indeed, the only surprises I met along the way came in the form of brief appearances by Bill Fagerbakke and Amy Sedaris. The steady supply of quips gets old pretty quickly and what should be the most serious scene in the movie is played as pure comedy, leaving the viewer unable to take any of the action and dialogue seriously and robbing the film of any chance at generating any sort of atmosphere. Watching Jennifer's body is like riding a roller coaster that only goes up and down a few small hills over the course of the entire ride. There's just nothing to get excited about here.

A Film that suffers from its star power?,

This review is from: Jennifer's Body [DVD] (DVD)
Many reviews have focused on the idea that the movie is essentially 'too hip' for its own good, the script by Diablo Cody can at times feel like a Tarrantino-esque tick list of cultural references, a complaint sometimes levelled at her much later written script 'Juno' - however it would be more accurate to say that this was a perfect example of the lighter more accessible less gross out side of the U.S mumblecore movement. 'Juno' made a star of Ellen Page, the films enjoyment rests on whether you like Ellen Page, and 'Jennifers Body' rely's heavily on whether you like Megan Fox or not. In total honestly, I loathed Megan Fox before I saw this movie, I saw her as the personification of the MTV generations attitude of slick sexiness over substance, however after reading interviews by her (and accidently observing some of the attached photoshoots - purely for research purposes obviously) I was shocked to see a determined attitude and witty vivaciousness that her character in 'Jennifers Body' personifies. 'Jennifers Body' is very much a guilty pleasure, it is very much what I would coin a 'piece of fluff' a film you put on while friends are round, however on the other side of the coin is the excellent witiness of Diablo Cody's dialogue - sure, it ain't 'Casablanca' but then again what is at the cinema these days.
The movies wit is often either overlooked, there is some excellent satire on the media with particular focus on the band, although the movie itself seems a bit too slick and polished to stand outside of an industry of which it is so critical of. 'Jennifers Body' is my personal favourite guilty pleasure of modern cinema, its very much well made nonsense from start to finish. Marc E. Wright 1st BA (Hons) Sociology
