This is a rare recording. It has great rhythm, emotion and power. Do yourself a favor and ignore the less than five-star reviewers. They have no love for this music and simply don't appreciate the awesomeness of Lully's works. This recording does his works justice. Do not think otherwise. You will enjoy this recording immensely if you appreciate French baroque of the period.

I first listened to this recording very closely, through fine headphones, while carefully following the provided translation, and, unfortunately, the work, as a whole, disappointed. For the music on these two discs is meant to accompany theatrical spectacle. Without that visual drama, of lavish scenery and sumptous costume, the entire opera, as an aural experience only, is largely a stream of recitative-like jigginess, generally in major keys, with barely any alluring harmony, and only a couple of fleeting instances of almost-attractive melody. In this, it is, of course, music that is very French.

However, on listening to this recording three further times WHILE WORKING, i.e. listening to the music as an accompaniment to other activity, I found it surprisingly pleasant and enjoyable. So if I ever happen to be in Paris when this opera, or any Lully opera, is presented at one of the opera houses or at Versailles I shall certainly make my way to a seat.

The performances of the orchestra and soloists on this recording are superb and the audio capturing itself is flawless.

Unfortunately the music has been almost exactly halved so as to be presented upon two discs and this has meant that, ridiculously, the remaining few minutes of one act are presented at the beginning of the second disc. This was a silly cut for the act in question could easily have been concluded on the first disc.

For lovers of the French baroque, a must have. For others, the declamation may be a bit tiring, and although all the singers are fine, the opera does not elicit what made them treasurable artists to the same degree as other offerings. This is particularly true of Veronique Gens and Rachel Yakar. The conducting is authoritative.

Phaeton is Great! 11 Dec. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a great opera. I think Phaeton is Lully's best opera. This one is exciting and fresh. The music and singing are very good. There are many memorable moments in Phaeton. Track 23 of disc 1 and track 24 of disc 2 prove that Lully is the baroque master. Baroque doesn't get any more powerful than those tracks! The opera's last track will have you remember the name Lully. The music is quite fitting for the time of King Louis XIV.

Sonorous tranport to the Versailles of Louis XIV 14 Sept. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
A musically balanced realisation of a classic Baroque opera on modern instruments. Lack of a visual focus always makes some of the interlude music seem superfluous. Notes in English and German expain the background to the work and the composer .
There is a translation of the libretti in English and German, the French text is printed in antique script in (old) French.
