Product Description

Review

'Richly detailed, elegantly written ... Sebba reveals a passionate outspoken woman' (Independent)

'This gripping new biography is sharp and intelligent ... An immensely enjoyable book. Her prose is as smooth and elegant as expensive cashmere, it reads like a novel' (Literary Review)

'Meticulously researched ... often moving ... Sebba demonstrates, it was as a mother that Jennie grew to excel, an excellence for which she will be remembered' (Evening Standard)

Sebba's prose is clear, her judgments sensible ... But the real strength of the book is its examination of Jennie's role in shaping the character and career of Winston (Sunday Telegraph)

Retrieving Jennie Churchill in sparkling three dimensions ... Sebba's biography does much to put flesh on the bones of a subject who has been reduced to a cipher for American brashness (Daily Telegraph)

'A well-judged, endearing biography' (Joanna Thomas-Corr, Evening Standard)

'A wonderful book brimming with the history and atmosphere of Edwardian England' (Margaret Fisk, New Books)

'A well-judged, endearing biography' (Evening Standard)

Unsurprisingly, this isn't the first biography of Winston's American mother, but it certainly does her justice, emphasising her insatiable sexuality and greed for life (Sunday Telegraph)

'Sebba shows his mother was a brilliant and energetic person in her own right ... if you want to learn about the son, then learn about the mother' (Northern Echo)

'A revelatory depiction of the woman who defied convention and helped shape a nation's political future' (Good Book Guide)

Well written story of the Churchill family , most entertaining giving an insight into the ruliing classes of Edwardian society and how they actually lived a life of resonable comfort on other peoples money.

One of the best that I've read on the subject of the Churchill family. Annie Sebba's work is really first class, having read all her other books, this one was the icing on the cake. A book worthy of a place on the shelf.

A well written account of Winston Churchill's mother ( and father) - succinct but detailed - that moves along at a reasonable pace. I'm half way through and although I can put it down, I keep coming back to it! Jennie Churchill's peripatetic lifestyle seems to have always been teetering on the verge of chaos and insolvency but she appears to have held it together by valuing herself, rather than her circumstances and having an almost childlike belief in the future. And yet she had the application to become a performing pianist ...and to write too. An intriguing lady who lived in a different world. A good read !

I bought this for my partner as a present as he has read other books about Jennie. He loves the book and says it fills in many gaps from those he has previously read.

I chose this title for our reading group because I thought Jennie would be a very interesting character, and I was not disappointed. I am old enough to remember Winston Churchill and found her ambition as a woman (but not a suffragette), which was at least partly fuelled by her profligacy fascinating
