Book Description

27 Mar 1997 Motor Sport
This volume is about one of motor racing's greatest writers: Denis Sargent Jenkinson, known affectionately as "DSJ2 or "Jenks". His famed column in "Motor Sport" was read avidly for the 40 years he was that magazine's continental correspondent. Over the years he also became an integral part of the motor racing scene, being perceived by the drivers and racing hierarchy as "one of us". He had also participated in motor racing at the highest level, first as the athletic passenger of Sidecar World Champion and later as the famed navigator who pointed Stirling Moss to perhaps the greatest of all motor racing triumphs - the record-shattering victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia round Italy sportscar race.

A tribute to the greatest racing journalist ever (and possibly one of the Great English Eccentrics) this book compiles 50-odd of Jenks' articles (mostly from the BRDC magazine) and adds some biographical material and tributes from other racers and journalists. Whether Jenks was discussing contemporary F1, his own competition career on two, three or four wheels, the history of the sport, road-car driving or indeed anything that happened to come into his mind he was witty, incisive, opinionated, and usually right.
Of course, it includes every schoolboy's favourite "With Moss In The Mille Miglia".
A great book and a great character. The only problem with the book is that reading it makes you miss Jenks even more.

Stirling Moss a boyhood hero on the race track then the Millie Miglia a thousand miles at an average speed of nearly 100MPH. Current F1 an hour and half to two hours men and boys?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Passsion indeed 25 Jan 2004
I came late to Jenks and I wish I had had the chance to know him, or at least meet him.
As he says, he wanted to be involved, not just to watch. How many of us feel like that. He writes in a simple, clean, elegant style that keeps your interest, even if you are not fascinated by the winning margin in a 1955 GP. It looks easy and makes me think I could write like that, but I couldnt of course.
Buy a copy now. Wish you had been at Goodwood to see him go up the hill with Sir Stirling. Wonder who he reminds you of without his beard.

An essential book for any motoring library. Written by one of the best if not the best motoring journalist of the period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dennis Jenkinson - Premier Motor Sports Journalist 3 Aug 2004
By David N. Cook - Published on Amazon.com
This book was not really written by S. Moss (he did the forward) but is a compilation of articles by Jenkinson who was England's foremost racing journalist from the sport's post-war revival until ill health forced his semi-retirement in the mid-1990's. During this era he reported on racing and cars for the British monthly Motor Sport. "Jenks" raced motorcycles in his youth and was Moss' co-pilot when they won the Mille Migila for Mercedes in 1955 so he wrote from the perspective of a participant and competitor. Pithy and opinionated, yes, but his writing remains the best record of the sport from his time. He always managed to get to the bottom of the story and had the respect of the most important drivers and team owners. A great book for the F1 enthusiast and fan of racing from the 50's through the 80's.
