A sumptuous fold-out package of 2CD's with a DVD is the result of 200hrs of music recorded in 2008, three years after UNESCO declaired San Basilio de Palenque of Columbia a 'masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity'. The notes provide a desciptive historical context for this walled community of runnaway slaves who have preserved their oral traditions brought from West Africa over 400yrs ago.
Solo voice, call and response, chant, ritual dance and rites accompanied by rhythmic hand-clapping, shakers, drumming, marimbula, an occasional flute, a hybrid influence with early Cuban son from the 1930's, are all part of the rich variety of sounds excellently sequenced over 20 tracks.
The second disc, (unfortunately mislabelled and transposed onto the original music disc, and vica versa on my copies), is of 12 remixes. Unlike many Western remix concept albums, this really does work, primarily because the original material is built on generations of rhythm. Here details of not-over-the-top reverb, counter phrases, subtle changes of emphasis in the repetitions, all serve to keep the ear listening as it acts to mesmorise for the dance culture. A sensitively conceived project that reveals afresh the traditional sounds and enhances the appreciation of Afro-Columbian music, rather than detracts.
Finally, the DVD adds a futher dimension of understanding to this community as the film follows three of the musicians during their daily lives, where music is embedded in the culture ,rather than a seperate entity. Although the final production is the result of gleaning from footage accumulated during a two month period, the film truly does capture the essence of life for this community - magical is the word.
This is a highly recommended 3 disc set, incredibly good value for a reasonably priced yet quality product, a three dimensional tribute to the People of Palenque.
