Mixmag, back in the day, were great at bringing you mixtapes from the DJs who were cutting edge at the time. Its difficult to imagine now but mix CD culture just didn't exist when these were coming out. The Ministry Of Sound Sessions series had just got under way and these were the only way you could get to hear what all these DJs you heard about in magazines played.Originally Mixmag would cram 2 DJs onto one CD, but near to the end of the series, you got some classy releases with just one DJ at the controls. From memory the specials were Derrick Carter, Dmitri from Paris and this one, Tom Middleton. At the time it was a great collection, full of wonderful deep house and jazzy breaks. Some absolute classics like his own Global Communication's The Way and Black Science Orchestra's New Jersey deep. Both still sounding as timeless as ever. Just glance over the track listing, it is pure class ... Ian O'Brien, D*Note, Ian Pooley, Wamdue Kids, Jimpster. Great stuff. One thing of note, this is Tom going straight at it with decks and no pro-tools in force ... so some of the mixing skills DO begin to stray here and there, especially since this is an adventurous mix. Don't let that marr your enjoyment, we're too spoilt on this culture of Pro-tool'ed to death CDs. If this is your first excursion into what the master Jedi has to offer, I can recommend one certain Pro-tool'ed mix instead of this. Middleton's Sound Of The Cosmos mix, 3 CDs of class. He makes no bones about using Pro-tools (stating this in the inlay blurb), but crafts a mix of such sublime moods and techical style ... you can let this one past!
