This book was great, in that it laid the foundation for the next two books of the trilogy very nicely. If you are a Star Wars fan, get the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn and then get this trilogy. You won't regret it! And to all of the people who are bent out of shape about Luke starting a Jedi Academy: First of all, this is how it was done thousands of years before. The only reason Luke trained with Yoda by himself is simply because there were no other known Jedi at the time. Sure, training each Jedi one-by-one would have given each more attention, I have no problem with Luke training them at an academy. It was the only way for Luke to set up a Jedi core of the New Republic quickly. Anyone who has a problem with this should open up their minds a bit more and should just go with the flow. I'd like to see them write a better Star Wars novel.

You should know before you read this I'm a Star Wars fan. A fan of the old films much more than the new, but not a convention-attender or anything like that.
So, on with the review.

The story essentially covers Luke's beginning of the Jedi academy, showing how he begins to find new Jedi - and his adventures in doing so. Beside Han travels with Chewie to Kessel, where he is held prisoner. Upon escaping, young force-user Kyp in tow, they once again are taken prisoner. Leia doesn't do much other than political affairs and look out for the kids.

Kevin Anderson does a good job of capturing the Star Wars feel, appealing simultaneously to the old trilogy - even bringing in lines from time to time - whilst progressing the story and bringing in new elements.
That said, the book does not add a huge amount to the saga. Luke would be the only one who seems to get any character progression and pages are often spent writing about storylines the reader will not care about.
I would recommend this book to those already aquainted with and interested in the Star Wars universe, it will offer little to anyone else.

I can only think that the people giving this book good reviews have never read any other SW novels because this one is truly, truly awful.
Example: Luke can use the force to walk safely across lava, yet can't sense that a ship that's landing holds a force user that he's previously met. The first act is far more difficult than any force user has pulled off before or since, and the second is something he could do easily before.
The only thing that stops this and the rest of the series being the worst SW novels ever is that Anderson wrote more of them (Darksaber is perhaps marginally worse).
If you don't want to miss any plot points that are relevant to future stories, you can get most of them from 'I Jedi', a much better story told by a far better writer

This book is one of the best ever written
i have just finished reading this book i could not put the book down. The story makes you want to keep reading. I'd reccomend all star wars fans to buy this book.

Anderson combines the exellence of the earlier novels with the brillance of the orignal trilogy, a must for all star wars fans.
